Why identify items ?
You know how you removed town portal scrolls because they were not adding anything to the game, so it became a button.
In a similar idea, what's the purpose of unidentified items if we get an NPC that ids them for free in town , or if we get a near unlimited supply of scrolls that take no room in our inventory ? Maybe it's time to get rid of unidentified items.. It's fun for the gambling NPC, but that's it. Last bumped on Jan 29, 2025, 12:12:17 PM

Maybe the Hooded One is not here to stay and/or free id is just for early access

its called immersion

Identifying items generally feels as if you got a nice rare only to find it is useless.
Already identified items generally feels as if you drop a rare, look at it, keep moving and every one in a while a rare you care about actually drops. Just comparing my experience of how PoE1 feels to games where items are already identified. In last epoch for example if you even see a rare that means it is good due to the filter hiding useless stuff. |

" what am i being immersed to ? It ain't working. If their goal is to make loot feels significant, using this old archetype isn't helping. If the hooded one disappears or isn't free, it doesn't change that it's an obsolete mechanic. If you agree that portals were fine to be made into button, and that stamina for running is fine to go away.. the next step is identifying items. What ends up happening is players pick up a bunch of unid stuff, keep killing until they are full , go to town, id everything. Effectively speaking, the item is never unidentified while in a situation where you would want it to be identified anyways. You're either killing or shopping. |

" For me it does a level of immersion and some mystery, whether I have found something useful or not. I prefer that, than finding identified item. |

its just gamble psychology.
Mystery, or what u want to call it. U play more, when u can pick up stuff and can see, whats in it. |

" feels like crappy immersion... More like a useless click ... If i find a watch with gps and alarm clock i can find it's functions by myself ... Last edited by The_Uruk#1218 on Jan 28, 2025, 8:38:09 PM

Call me old fashioned but I actually enjoy bringing a stack of scrolls with me and IDing it as I map. It’s like opening up a gift on Christmas, but most of the time it’s just sweaters and not Michelangelo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles like I asked for.

Well, from the point of view of the player, things can seem somewhat pointless, but the devs essentially want you to go back to town or hideout to identify loot as a measure of friction. Otherwise there'd be no reason to go back at all.
Whether or not this is a good thing or not isn't really relevant. Scrolls are there to give you the option of IDing loot on the spot (as well as strongboxes but I don't think there's any modifier that outright kills you anymore so that's not an issue unless you want to slam them) but are both limited and takes up space. Honestly these posts have the feel of 'give them an inch and they'll take a mile'. Last edited by StarburstSilver#4888 on Jan 28, 2025, 9:13:30 PM
