Opinion on Runes

Not being able to remove or replace runes in armor and weapons is unintuitive and not very fun.

As a long time player of Path of Exile 1, the sockets conjure up the idea of modularity. Every other socketed thing can be removed and replaced easily, and that function is part of why Path of Exile is great.

Runes buck this trend while masquerading as a part of it.

I personally believe the game would be better if runes could be as easily removed and replaced as Jewels in passive Jewel sockets, and Gems in Gem sockets.

The way it is now, I feel like I have made a mistake for every single rune I have ever slotted into armor or weapons, which makes me less likely to engage in this facet of the game in the future at all.

What is the point of this feature of the game? What function does it serve to make me feel like I've made a mistake if I engage with it? What harm would it cause to be able to use these sockets the same way that every other socket in the game functions?

When it comes to permanent irrevocable changes to an item, the only other one I know of which compares, is Corrupting an Item. Currently, Runes are like "corruption light" with little warning and no reason to think it will be that way.
