The instance I have a portal to in town shouldn't ever close anymore

If you can save an instance state for 8-16 hours while I sleep and do other stuff the next day there's no reason for it to die while I'm the bathroom.

That was infuriating enough in POE1, with the extremely large areas in POE2 it's far worse.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

I actually don't understand why this is happening. I can exit the game in an instance and it stays, but if I go to town and take a short break, it closes. I actually thought at first I had some setting messed up.
Just go back through the portal and pause the game. Ez fix
"Escape" pauses the game
One sad Exile

Exiting the game would also work if I knew I was going to be away too long. That's not the point. This is another case of janky design where they have a solution to the actual problem but for whatever reason are making us jump through pointless hoops instead.

I'm also curious to know the reason behind the portals auto-closure after a while in town.

It's how it worked in POE1 (which didn't save your state when you logged out). For whatever reason - probably either not though of, or planned but not done yet - they never changed it.

Keeping the instance live consumes server resources; the original game just didn't have a way to save the entire map state. (And given the massive loot explosions of that game, saving would be much more expensive than in POE 2.)

Thanks for taking the time to explain.
In that case I might join the group of "maps are too big" because I usually take a break mid-run of a map to check my loot int town, sell what I don't need, upgrade, talk to folks. And I always feel an urgency to do everything quick before the gates close.
That's not a nice feeling.
+1 to feedback topic.

a) for slow playing style, hope local instance maps are permanent.
b) players who prefer repeat slaying/levelling in same instance can easily, reset instance area (already in game currently)

allow players' agency to determine play mode.
