NPC & Environmental interaction

Hi,

What sort of quest variety can we expect?

Will there be any interaction with the environment? eg opening doors, haven't seen any of this so far.

Will there be NPCs in the gaming area, so far everything Lumin has come across needs to die... again a bit more variety here would be good.

.. Idea for NPCs - You may chance upon a group of mercs battling mobs. You can choose to help them, they may reward you, but if the battle leaves you with low health, they may decide to turn on you instead...

as i was reading the title, my first thought was: when it rains some mobs run under trees or something xD that would be nice too :D

but i think your point is good... intelligent quests would be nice. and sometimes i would just like to find npcs out of the city... some strangers who maybe fight against mobs and run away or atack, if the see you.
it would be nice, if there were not just monsters. bandits who talk with you and maybe wanna kill you... thats nice ;D

lost your point, sorry xD

Oh FUCK yes! I can't be the only one who always loved to follow the barbarians and keep them alive in Act 5 of D2:LoD. It also made that whole opening sequence, the hills of battle feel so more alive, it really felt like there was an active siege against Horrogath and a struggle to break it.

As to your other points:
You're some exile or some shit and then you start killing monsters.

That's pretty much the story ... I think most of the quests right now are temporary or at least not finished and polished.

Completely agree - I loved those Barbs in Act 5.
I'm surprised, these ideas are actually pretty solid. It might be worth it for GGG to take a look at implementing some of these once they have the time/resources.
Chris did say on the podcast with Flux that their are still many thing coming and not even done yet.

Your ideas are all good and who knows they might be already working on them.

I thing id be sweet as well if say you rescued people from monsters and got r little something for it.

or like you said aid in a fight and maybe get a skill gem for it.
I also loved the act 5 barbarians, but I usually left them behind because they were slightly under-powered. If these NPC's had a little muscle, they would be taken more seriously by the player (not just left to die). GGG should definitely use this idea or one similar to this.
Oh no, college incoming. I better get a beta key so i can procrastinate like a god.

Thanks, once you start thinking about mobs and NPCs interms of being friendly; neutral or hostile it opens up loads of options for variety within the gameplay:

Escort/rescue missions.
Defending ensieged enclaves.
Robbing or rescuing fleeing merchant wagons.
Arbitraiting peace between 2 waring factions (or deciding to fight for one side).
Joining in NPC counter attacks against the mobs.

etc etc!

Also I just read the Beta charter, I'm happy to say that answered all my concerns about the storyline!
What you're saying does actually have a some truth to it but you have to keep in mind that the story, so far at least, is not as deep as some would think.

Alone, or with other exiles, they must develop their skills and discover powerful magical artifacts in order to survive the challenges of a cutthroat post-apocalyptic fantasy world.

I think the latest patch that was released does point toward more of what you're asking for, though, I see that they did in fact add a friendly NPC and the guys from GGG are in the process of adding new quests, I would assume as fast as their modest team of men can. (And yes, your ideas of adding quest variety are indeed pretty good and could make for a better player experience!)

One thing I will say, though, is that you have to keep in mind that this is in fact the beta. I know that seems like it is the go-to answer for a lot of issues one may well find with the game, but hey, I mean it differently here!

Why is there less story or plot? Spoilers! Sure, the planned plot or story may not be as heavy as other games', but I would actually be really happy, and hardly surprised, if the guys at GGG weren't throwing all their cards on the table right off the bat, that just wouldn't make sense.

In closing I think this is not something anyone should be worrying about too much and I am sure the devs have read this and taken it into account, they have eyes and ears everywhere!

Sorry if there are typos or mistakes in here, I'm in a bit of a hurry typing it! :P
