Targeting Content in the New Atlas
|
I kinda liked the new atlas system at first... but the more I play it the worse it seems.
I get that the idea of its design is to give you an infinite progression through travelling the map while adding real stakes to dying. But the problem is that tower system. It is VERY hard to target any content in specific, and I get that maybe it was too easy in poe 1, but let me explain the problem with an example. Let's say you wanna farm some breach. You go around, find some maps that have breaches between you and the nearest tower. You do, let's say 5 maps, and one or two have breaches. Already fairly low. Then you go to the tower, do it, then put a tablet on it that puts breaches on it. ASSUMING you got a tablet with that specific mod, and I'm not even sure they exist. Then it chooses maps at random within range, but oh no, you don't know the range and you don't control which maps, so it chooses, let's say, out of 8 maps, 5 you can easily access and 3 that are way far out, and in the opposite direction you're progressing your atlas. No problem right? You just do those maps. Nope, remember, they are scattered and you have to get to them, so you end up doing, let's say, 12 maps to get to those 5 maps. And on top of that, then you have to go to a NEW tower, but oh, guess what, of those 12 maps, only 3 got you closer to the next tower, but 2 of those you can no longer re-do when you put a tablet on that tower. So you do 3-4 more maps to get to the next tower and repeat. All in all, you did around 20ish maps, got around 7ish with the mechanic you wanted (assuming you didn't EVER die), AND you had to have the right tablet on you. This is obviously an estimate, but I'd even argue its a generous one. When you combine this with the fact that maps are bigger (or at least feel bigger since best you can do is 40ish movespeed), and the struggle to uncover more of the atlas, the new atlas feels incredibly tedious and boring. Maybe it's better if you're targeting 4 or 5 mechanics at once, but you have to build up to something like that, and god forbid you die in a map with 4 mechanics and waste all that investment. Maybe I'm missing something, but tbh as things are right now, between the map system and the mandatory 3-trial sekhema for third ascension, I'm having a really hard time not dropping the game...
