Blood Mage crash to desktop with Dusk Vigil staff

1) Be a Blood Mage with 'Sanguimancy' allocated
2) Have the Dusk Vigil unique staff equipped
3) While casting a spell get hit and stunned by an enemy

When these three conditions are met I crash immediately. This has been tested by me fairly thoroughly, if I take the staff off I do not crash. I've done a lot of troubleshooting over the weekend including swapping RAM sticks and installing new OS on new SSD, as well as testing multiple video drivers. Nothing seemed to fix it.

This was quite difficult to catch. From my perspective the game just started crashing in act 2. It never crashed in town or while walking, because I wasn't being hit by enemies. I could still get hit by enemies and not crash, for so long as I wasn't getting stunned while casting a spell. It's only when all 3 of the above conditions are met does the game crash.

The fact that you have to get stunned from the hit made this so hard for me to figure out. Even when I suspected Sanguimancy as the cause I tested playing in act 1 and didn't experience crashes, but the only reason I didn't crash was because I had enough life that my character wasn't getting stunned by anything. As soon as I took off all my gear that gave me life and stun threshold and got stunned I immediately crashed.

Easiest way I tested this was casting a directional spell like Unearth and let enemies behind me hit me.

Specs:
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080
ASUS TUF GAMING WI-FI X570 motherboard
32GB DDR4

Drivers tested:
Geforce Game Ready Driver 566.36 (Dec 6, 2024)
Geforce Game Ready Driver 566.14 (Nov 12, 2024)

So it was the staff all along??? I have been dealing with this exact same issue for the past 2 days doing all kinds of troubleshooting and independently just refunded my blood mage passives and that fixed my issue. I was getting ready to write up a bug report about my findings but allow me to corroborate this post instead. It feels nice to know I wasn't the only one!

Yes I believe so, if you could test and report back it would be great to have another person corroborate my testing. Make sure you are fighting enemies that are capable of stunning you.

Yes I believe so, if you could test and report back it would be great to have another person corroborate my testing. Make sure you are fighting enemies that are capable of stunning you.

I went ahead and respecced back into my blood mage passives and I can confirm that this combination with the dusk vigil staff and blood mage ascendancy I will immediately crash to desktop when stunned while casting.

Removing the staff or blood mage passives both result in no more crashes.

I think the reason I didn't consider the staff was related was because I played using the staff for hours without issue. Super niche bug, I feel super unlucky for having my start to PoE2 essentially ruined

Honestly I am amazed you figured it out at all, I was gonna report some mysterious crashing bug related to my blood mage ascendancy and perhaps a combination of skills I was using, I did consider the staff might be related somehow but I'd say I was missing 2/3rds of the puzzle overall.

Yeah it sucks I missed out on a couple of days due to this same bug at least you're not alone.

My friend has that problem too. Not sure if its the staff, but he did use it before. He unspecced out of the ascendancy, because he thought thats the issue and that helped, but giving up your entire ascendancy is frustrating him.


Whenever I played with him and he had his ascendancy we both crashed at the same time. I'm ready to send dxdiag information

He uses an AMD Ryzen 7 5800x and I use a Ryzen 7 7800x3D.

Hmm. It's possible this bug might take different forms depending on individual user configurations. Unfortunately none of my friends rolled Blood Mage to help me get more data. You should tell your friend to try his ascendancy without the staff.

that did fix it. He wanted to use that staff so bad, but I guess its better to not use the staff than the ascendancy lol
