why is controller targetting odd?

i cant target monsters when i am moving around. i think in poe 1 i could target based on direction i was moving and only needed to use manual targeting (right stick) when doing target specific spells. i would like for that to be the same so i had some control over targeting while using dpad and other controller button bindings. otherwise i need to utilize both sticks and button bindings in endgame. also it should be fine to barrel roll backwards with that kind of targetting. im not sure if this is the bug but i often find targetting too difficult on controller.
