Passive skill and weapon set….what’s the point?

Why assign to a specific weapon set when if you don’t allocate the point to a specific set , won’t the passive cover both weapon sets?

Passive cover both sets if you don't set it on specific.
You assign to a specific set when there's a branch in the tree where for example if you go left it's good for 2 handed weapons and if you go right it's good for dual wield, so let's say you have 10 points and all 10 can be assigned to weapon sets, you click on weapon 1 to put 10 points to go left, and click on weapon 2 to put 10 points and go right. Therefore the 10 points u just put becomes 20 points but only 10 will work for a time.
If you have 10 passive SP (skill points) to use no matter how you choose to allocate them you can only use 10 SP.
So in the end why go through the trouble?

So as I unlock passives down the tree it doesn’t really matter what I assign it as because I still use up a skill point. From what I have seen is if you don’t allocate it doesn’t matter as it either applies to the skill you use or not.

IE, I choose to pick passive that gives bonus to poison, even though weapon #1 has poison and weapon #2 hd lighting it doesn’t really matter as I didn’t allocate the point to either so it covers both?

Sorry this seems to be the most confusing part of the game and I’m trying to understand the benefit when it doesn’t seem like their is one.

No it's not. Try it out and refund 1 point and see, you can put 1 in weapon 1 (click the upper right button first before you assign) and you can click weapon 2 and still have 1 point to put (it just doesn't show in bottom left, but in upper right it shows the difference), now click weapon 2 and click somewhere else in the tree and click apply. You see so you actually can spend 2 points for that 1 you just refunded.

The caveat is that the point of origin of the branching must be a neutral skill point used by both weapons, as each branch can only continue their own weapon set tree.
idk man having weapon swap for grenades to make them stupidly strong then swapping to shots and having a weapon swap for that making them stupidly strong for the same passive point investment is very useful
