White is the way to go

My best gear in act II comes from white , Trans/Augm/regal/ex. Don’t overlook white bases, they are the best way to get going imho. Much more reliable than waiting for a good drop. Had several +x to skills (gloves, weapons) as first mod, which helped tremendously.

If you're not playing SSF you definitely shouldn't waste your exalts on crafting during the acts. Buy something on trade instead

It is and you can get some pretty crazy items for 1 ex at your level. Or just save them if you get stuck later.
