Not being able to choose lower skillgems limits build possibilities.

I'm a Monk at lvl 50 and I want to pick Elemental skills and Witch spirit gems. I only get lvl 11 gems dropped, and I don't have the Int to pick a lvl 11 Elemental or Witch skill. I do however have the Int to have a lvl 5 skill, but there's no way to lower the gem level.

Just like in PoE, I love to experiment with weird stuff, but this limits that possibility.

My solution: The level on the gem is the maximum lvl you can take. When you pick a skill, it shows you the maximum lvl that your attributes can handle. So with a lvl 11 gem, you can at best get a lvl 11 skill, but you can also use that gem to get a different skill at lvl 3.

Edit; It would also give a new use to gems, instead of just sitting in the stash. I now have 43 skill gems gathering dust.

You have to go clear zones that are lower level for the lower level skill gems. They are scaled based on zone level.

I agree. An idea to complement yours : If we want to go beyond our stats, we could, but the game should at first ask us if we want to downgrade the gem skill to be useable with our current stats.

Go into Settings - Game and at the bottom should be Gemcutting Restrictions.

Turn that off and you should be able to click on gems and engrave them with higher level uncut gems.

I understand that's how it works now, but no one enjoys farming a lvl 10 area when they're lvl 50+.

That still makes the skill just as high as the uncut gem, so I won't be able to use it. Thanks for the tip though, didn't know that option!

Agreed you should be able to downgrade your gem because you can always upgrade it with a higher level one.
