PS5 - Trail of Sek - Escape Room Gameplay - UI Bug or Feature

Playing through the game and loving it so far.

Had some questions about the for Assent trail and if the fact that you cannot pick up items of interact with the crystals during the escape trail while enemies are present is a bug of feature.

My friend is playing on his PC and I saw that they could still pick up items and even click on the crystals during their trail. So this got me wondering if this is a UI bug dealing with the auto-targeting feature?
