I missed 2nd ascendency

I went into the portal I didn't know it will move me to cruel difficulty. I didn't due the 2nd ascendancy but I got the item. If I use it again in cruel will it allow me to get that 2nd point back or I missed it entirely?

I wish there was kind of confirmation dialogue to alert you that you are moving to cruel and approve before continueing.
