Thunder of Chayula (WIP)
Thought I would put out my Acolyte of Chayula theorycraft build for others to take a look at. The general idea is a monk spellcaster using primarily lightning spells and empowering them with added chaos damage.
For defenses it will be mostly evasion but some ES along with Ghost Shroud. It will also be using MoM and fuel that with the recovery from the flames picked up from Waking Dream/Lucid Dreaming. I’ve been exploring builds along these lines, and I really love the concept behind yours! Could you share your thoughts on the skills you’re using and how they stack up against alternatives? I’d also be curious to know which skill gems you’d prioritize and why.
If possible, a more detailed guide or breakdown of your approach would be amazing. Have you had the chance to test it yet? If so, some gameplay footage would be fantastic to see how it performs in action! | |

So on further testing, this build as it stands seems to be DOA. GGG gut Damage Added As in the same way they did damage conversion. This mean all of the %Damage Added as Chaos nodes scale only with the base damage of the triggering skill plus any flat damage.
In this instance, the chaos damage will only increase with %chaos damage. Any %lightning to bring up the damage of the base skill will not boost the chaos damage bonus. %spell damage may also not work but I wasn't able to test that specifically. The knock on effect is that the extra Chaos damage is minimal unless you are already using a Chaos skill. On top of that, the Reality Rending node only adds damage on hits which limits the build even further to chaos damaging skills that deal most of their damage through hits and not DOTs. You would have to go full MoM + CI + EB, but there's a unique ring that converts all elemental damage to chaos damage, at the expense of having 0 Chaos Resistance, which doesn't matter due to CI's immunity.

" I'm still testing but right now my primary is Arc. Ball lightning is also a contender for primary damage dealer. The original plan was to use Ghost Dance and Mana Remnants for the spirit skills to help keep up ES and Mana, respectively. Also, I was testing whether BL or OoS would be better for applying shock and Exposure. But since we would have to do full conversion to Chaos to make the extra damage from the Extra Damage as Chaos nodes worthwhile we will not be able to shock or have any need for exposure. Because of the way they changed how the 'Extra Damage as X' stat, it is close to useless unless it also matches the base damage type. It also doesn't work with DOTs which makes the Acolyte really underpowered as an ascendancy option right now. It can probably be really tank but it's damage output is severely lacking. As Telka0#4237 pointed out, there is a unique ring that makes all element convert to chaos which will probably be necessary for this build to deal enough damage to be worth using. " You would need enough Int to use all your skills, enough Str for any supports, and enough Dex for your Body armor. After that, I would probably put everything spare into Int for the extra mana. The only option is to go crit, spell damage, increase % dmg on crit, shock, intimidation, rage, and exposure

Here is an updated skill tree. I've decided to scrap the chaos damage all together and moved the points from Reality Rending and over into Consuming Question. This will give us more ES generation. Damage will be purely Lightning now with the Chayula flames being used just for regen.
Pure lightning will allow us to scale damage more efficiently as we have easier access to shock and damage pen/exposure. Arc will be our primary damage skill. Ball Lightning will be used for inflicting shock and exposure. I've found Orb of Storms doesn't work too well as it limits us to a small area which can get us killed. Ghost Dance and Mana Remnants, plus clarity will give us more mana and ES. Altogether, this should make the build very sturdy but I'm not certain how well it's damage will be.
