Feedback: inadequate error when cutting new gem brings you over one of your stats

I was trying to cut new support gem. Clicked on the "Uncut support gem", selected a skill gem from my equipped gems and then selected the new support skill. When I clicked "Engrave" the window closed and the only effect was a chat (!) message "This operation could not be completed."
I didn't even notice the message the first try.
I did notice it the second try and had no idea what it means!
After researching a bit more I found that crafting that support skill and adding it to my frostbolt would have brought my DEX requirement 1 point above what I have.

Why the game didn't tell me that instead of the cryptic message in the chat?
