make respeccing free so people can change there build more

Give poeple the chance to learn the game instead of punishing them for choosing the wrong note

Thats a bad idea
Why is that a bad idea?

It's not a bad idea, but a better idea would be to just reduce the cost of respeccing. The cost is astronomical at later levels. Punishingly expensive.

I could see how it'd be a bad idea when the game launches but we should be able to test things out during EA.
Jonathan has been very clear about the idea that choices must mean something, and infinite free respec has the impact of trivializing every choice you make while building a character. Giving us gold that drops throughout the game, while allowing us to use some of that gold for respec, was the compromise solution: it maintains the value of choices while also giving some flexibility in early stages of a build. For the record, I'm OK with this solution, which I first saw implemented in Titan Quest back in 2006.

Infinite free respec will not be happening. A modest increase to gold drop rates in early game might.

It was free to respect in TQ up to a certain level threshold. But again, none of that is relevant to a game's testing phase.
Still, Poe 1 is much better in that regard.

are people tweaking builds or making totally new builds?

if its a new build then they lose the games campaign and levelling progression systems being tested if they let people just sit in endgame on 1 character spamming builds.

it cheapens characters, makes them have less weight and importance if you dont have to invest into them. i want a new character, plug in new nodes, put on the skills, 5 minutes later "oh is that what that build feels like at lvl95? oh ok, next...". thats so meaningless and throwaway.

its better to lose players who dont want to put the time into a character than let the game become that disposable. this isnt an 8 hour on rails campaign game, its a game where people spend 50, 100, 200+ hours on a single character and then reroll 10s of times over many years. its a game where things matter, they are earned and you build a relationship with them.

Depends on when you do respec.
Good luck respeccing during acts in PoE1. How many regrets can you find in 10 acts?... For me it is less than 5, usually around 2.

For late game though, PoE1 is definitely easier on pockets (as regrets become disposable). Gold costs do scale a little too fast starting from some point.
