PoE 2 how do you leave a zone with out having to back track to a WP?

I was at the act 1 last boss and couldn't beat him so decided to leave but had to back track for about 40 mins to the WP. I almost threw my controller against the wall. Like why do I need to fight through a whole area just to get out. What happens if I can't get out?
