Is this intended for the boss loot to disappear?

After I slayed the hyena boss, I got surrounded by a horde and killed in a matter of seconds. After I respawned - all the loot was gone, including the unique staff that dropped, but the boss was still dead.
It was a bit upsetting. I wanted that staff, especially considering I'm playing sorceress.
