POE2 Xbox - Very first skill gem would not engrave

On first character last night, I made it to the first time and had a skill gem. When opening inventory, the tutorial system told me to hit the X button to engrave it, but it would not take. I moved the item around my inventory, but no help. Logging out and back in *did* solve the problem.

Unclear if it mattered, but I had the console UI set up with both my HUD on the left and the inventory on the left in preparation of playing with someone else.

Same problem playing on a Dual Sense controller on PC (Steam Input off) using XBox prompts. HUD set to right, map off.
