The game is much harder than I anticipated but...

I'm not going to give up though I'm no Soulslike player at my age.

(Theory)
I wonder since the game was designed by the people who designed POE1 they obviously have the most skill towards it, it almost feels like this would be the perfect tempo/skill level for them and other pro-players who have dedicated themselves to this type of play.

(Speaking only for me)
Its a frustrating experience for sure but its such a beautiful game....

Like I said, I wont quit I'm just hoping solutions open up for us older and a bit slower players... beyond "Git Gud".

However I wouldn't know a thing about how to balance it for both.

...and maybe you can't.

Without knowing where you are in the game at present, it's hard to provide advice outside of general tips :-

* use dodge for major attacks (which are are telegraphed)
* use WASD (or whatever keybinds tickle your fancy) and skills simulaneously - I've been circle strafing now - this is like a critical change that, while it may take a bit to learn, will make the biggest difference imho
* learn your class skill synergies and combos, they make a huge difference to your dps early on
* for a lot more builds now, buying (and carefully selecting) item upgrades from vendors is sometimes necessary to help keep you at parity with the monster difficulty - vendors have strategic value now, as do their wares

hope that helps!
thank you so much!

I can manage past the bosses up to Devourer and then I have died like 5 times in a row.

I was trying WASD (I would have preferred controller but I cant get the inventory and menu down enough to enjoy it)

I originally picked the Warrior because the idea of tankiness appealed to me but the hits seem really slow to me and the timing of the spikes never really seem to help (they always pop up like after everything is dead...lol)

That's on you if you couldn't see it was dark souls like ARPG. I'm sure the the dodging will be brought in-line. Most ppl dont want a dodge/block fight. This is exactly how POE started, we learned the game and they balanced around us.

Oh yeah, the Devourer is pretty overtuned atm but you can definitely do it! Some tips :-

* you'll need to dance / circle strafe around his head (avoiding his melee swipes) OR quite far away (but then keep strafing to avoid his spit attacks) - if you hang around his tail, the tail hits very hard and isn't worth the risk; dodge away immediately if you get stuck there
* when he breathes, he covers an area in poison; try to face him towards a wall when he does that then dodge out, and don't accidentally walk back in it (lasts about 10 sec? the ground poison damage *hurts* if you stay in it for more than a second or two)
* disengage and clear adds if you have to, to avoid being overwhelmed (and recharge flasks)
* make the most of the burst windows you have on the boss, no shame if you need to take 5 - 10 mins on this one (in its current state)
* if you have gold and a vendor has a higher dps weapon - buy it! Every little bit makes a difference.

Took me 3 goes as well, and I'm sure a lot of other players hit a hurdle with him for a bit too.

best of luck! The feeling once you down him will be well worth it ^^
I got him!

Thank you for the advice and it dropped a much needed sweet helm that added some much needed stats!

Thanks for the kind (and rare) advice.
I am liking many aspects of the game (no loot pinata, for example. PoE became an uncontrolled bloat long ago - this reminds me of PoE on release) but the dodge mechanic is something I see as not at all attractive. I could be in the minority but I dont think non stop dodging around a boss is exciting or fun. (and yes there are bosses telegraphing non-stop - lucky I have minions to kill them...slowly eh).

Also the dodge mechanic - at least for me - feels very clunky (like a chubby chap trying a somersault and failing). I do hope they tune it over time in EA.
Grats! I'm glad I was able to help in some way, and hope you enjoyed that sweet kill vibe hehe =)
Some people are not understanding what people are saying. Yes it can be done. But after 2 hrs of feeling like you have been chased by 3 mountain lions. You might be happy to be alive. But. Would you walk that trail again? Hoping to find a gun in the bushes. To find it has 1 bullet. To maybe find a corner to hide in with paper walls?
I am not getting the feeling of being satisfied. The end game looks like it is a loooooong ways away.
i use a gamepad and 1st thing i learned is this is not poe1....so gotta adapt and "get gud!"
