How do you play melee?

I started out with the witch and the game was fairly easy with access to both minions and ranged attack. Then I tried out the monk and ended up dying all the time. What it feels like to me is that I'm supposed to dodge hits that I in the first PoE could just tank. This is fine, but I don't seem to have the mobility to do so.

With ranged attacks, I can still move while attacking and have the advantage of distance. With melee, I seem to be rooted in place or tied to whatever movement the skill itself has. The monk does not feel as mobile as the flavor text suggests. While it's possible that GGG has made ranged and minion builds much stronger than melee, it's also possible that I just missed something about melee.

Do you have nay good tips about how I can achieve the mobility with the monk or how to make melee work without the mobility?

warrior main. also played sorc for first act.

Melee is weak early, but ramps up more as you level.
more than casters in my limited experience.


first half of act 1 was brutal, mainly because I though I could glass cannon my way through like with sorc.


but bosses after that were much easier, clear was about the same.



Thanks. If what you're saying is true, then maybe GGG should make the game a bit easier first act and ramp it up to normal later or maybe make changes that benefits melee early game. It is early access though.

I made an attempt with the warrior and it went much better. I would suggest taking the money made via another character to deck your melee character out. More life and defenses helped a lot. I'll give the monk another go soon and see.
