Checkpoint Respawns me in Massive Monster Packs

In Freythorn and died in the small ritual area and kept getting respawned in a small corridor surrounded by dozens of enemies with no way to move. I even left to character selection and tried restarting but it stuck me at the same checkpoint. It took me about 10 tries of spamming certain attacks long enough to bust a hole I could role out of and then had to dodge roll for a minute just to get free long enough to clear the pack,

Is there no option to respawn in town on console or am I just blind?
