[New player 50hrs PoE1] PoE2 frustrations
I'm a very new player to PoE, 50 hours in PoE and 10 in PoE2. So far I can easily say that PoE 1 is a more fun game to me and probably many other new players. The reason for this is that PoE2 is too punishing with deaths when simply exploring. As I am a new player, I don't know what makes an item good, I choose poorly for the passive skill tree and as a result I take a long time to kill enemies. This is fine, if I only have to kill enemies ONCE. This is where my frustration comes from. In PoE1 if you died, you just lost some exp. In PoE2 if you die the entire area gets reset. And me having a shitty build, i die a lot. So where in PoE1 i could just walk back to where i was and continue in PoE2 i have to spend 10, 15, 20 minutes or even more to even get back where i was. If i don't die at that. And its also easier to die, because there are more environmental hazards, enemies laying in ambush. When you try to weave around enemies only to aggro another group, get surrounded and stuck. Get stuck on a wall and surrounded.
The system of a map reset on death is fine as a modifier or for people that like a challenge, but for new players that don't understand the game. It is frustrating to play. I want to explore the map and enjoy what the developers have made. I cannot do so when the only thing i am focusing on is not dying tldr: Dying is too punishing Last bumped on Dec 14, 2024, 12:45:12 PM

I think the difficulty level is perfect and disagree with you. If it was any easier it would be boring.

oh no. the difficulty of the fights is perfect. Having to try bosses a couple times makes it fun and needing to be careful in a fight with trash mobs is fine too. But losing all progress in an area because you died is frustrating. Having to redo the fights with trash mobs is frustrating, especially because the fights are more difficult

The difficulty of bosses is frustratingly perfect. the difficult of normal monsters is ridiculously overtuned and TOO PUNISHING. Its like they took poe1 ruthless and dialed the difficulty UP. Reseting the entire zone on death is too punishing.
The aggro radius of monsters is too large. It is not a good sign when someone fights a boss 10 times before succeeding for the challenge then wants to delete the game because of poorly balanced normal monsters that overwhelm experienced players. I thought this was path of exile, not path of dodge roll every .5 seconds. |

Hmm, I like that it punishes you for making dumb mistakes like rushing in and poor positioning. I really think it’s a skill issues guys. Sure, some mobs move a bit faster and you’re more easily ganked. So potentially you’ll need to try different strategies. Isn’t that the fun part of the challenge? Discovering how to overcome the difficulty? Getting better mechanically, etc.

No, its not about the difficulty. I completely agree that it should be punishing if you make a mistake. The part I would like to see changed is the mob respawns.
Lets say i've cleared almost the entire area but near the exit is a rare mob. I make a mistake and die to it. Thats fine, they should be difficult. What is not fine is that the ENTIRE area respawns and i have to do EVERY fight again. Now that is just frustrating |

I agree the zone wide wipe / respawn is NOT fun. It does not seem like a well balanced mechanic. Seems geared toward making new players want to quit, not keep playing. There are better 'anti rush' mechanics that can be used.
Resetting the instance when one dies is ridiculously punishing if you just killed a boss, then die 5 seconds later to some silly/bugged/poorly planned/troll programming boss ground effect that persists after the boss' death. If the instance reset is intentional to 'prepare players for maps' when its basically like hardcore in a softcore setting (you die, map over, which is BS, but thats a topic for another thread), this should be communicated to the player, somehow, early on. (if it is already, then it is unclear and needs to be better communicated) |

" I don't think it's the difficulty factor that makes the game more or less boring. Personally I've already moved on because I indeed find POE2 extremely boring. What makes it boring is not having very interesting notable passives; not having as many skills to choose from; and not having very many interesting interactions to play with. And it appears like they're more than happy to nerf the few good interesting interactions into unusable rather than let us have fun. So for that reason, I hope this game cools off hard and GGG realizes all the mistakes they're making. Right now it seems like they're letting their egos get the better of them. |
