Game not available in your region

My POE account is bound in Japan and after getting my EA key I tried to add it to my Steam(Located in Hong Kong) and I get the error that the game is not available in my region. So my questions are 1. Is this because my Steam account is in Hong Kong? 2. Is there a way to make it work? I know that there is a stand alone client but I would like to add it to Steam. Thank you to anyone that can give some advice.

You could use vpn to switch to another country and then connect to steam. Besides that you can only use the standalone client.

How risky is it to use a VPN in Hong Kong?
That might be your best bet.

there's also the risk of using Steam through a VPN. I know I wouldn't be putting my account at risk like that so standalone client would be the recommendation.

I've been doing it for years. Seems as though so long as you're not actively cheating their sales/regional pricing or in game then you're good.

I gotta use VPN for everything. The great Firewall stops my access.
