AG of smiting's clunky behaviour

I'm trying the transfigured Animated Guardian gem.

Damage seems more than fine (testing in T7 maps for now, double-wisped rares die in a few hits), but the AG's aggro feels horrible.
AG runs to an enemy and one taps it, and then for some reason it picks another mob screens away and runs to it, completely ignoring all monster packs in between.

So far, I tested:
- Regular behaviour. AG sticks to me, aggroes close to nothing.
- Agressive (sacrified a support gem for feeding frenzy). AG aggroes monsters super far away, gets body-blocked and stands around helpless until I convoke it.
- Agressive and phasing (with Voidwalker equipped on AG). No more body block, but AG continues running past packs to chase a random white mob half a screen away.
- Agressive + Ancient Skull. Just the same but quicker x) Also, impossible to convoke (as intended), so AG just goes offscreen faster, while monsters try hacking me down...

I watched some videos, including the skill demo a month ago, and while AG is nowhere near a TS deadeye clearing-wise, they do seem to behave better than mine.

So, what can I do to have it hit close enemies ?
