How to Summon and Equip an Animate Guardian?

I'm throwing identified gear on the ground, hovering over the gear until gear is highlighted, then I'm clicking on Animate Guardian ability. But it's not working

I'm only using yellow gear, as I've never done this before.

Your animate guardian isnt high enough level. Check the gem. You can only use level 39 items on it right now.
