Skill gems with their own skill trees?

I'm quite new to this game so my post might be filled with incorrect assumptions, but I see that the socketable skill gems don't give any options to the player when they level up. You click to level up and..that's it. Every skill gem at level 1 through 20 is the same as any other.

There exist support gems that let you customize skill gems more deeply, but it would add to the depth of play and perhaps trade if skill gems could give you options when they level up instead of being a simple one-click power boost.

As a crude example: the fireball skill gem levels up and the player clicks on the little level up button. It then presents the player with a simple option to increase its area of effect, damage or damage over time more.

Whichever option the player picks will subtly affect the gem as it levels up, while retaining its core function and character as a skill.

I think a small, simplistic (Even if it's just two or three divergent options with subtle effects presented every levelup) skill tree for each skill gem would complement the great socketting support gem system to allow a massive number of combinations for players to experiment with an fit their play style.

Trades of skill gems would also become more interestin,g since with primitive skill trees attached to those gems most would be unique from any other that exists.

Tl;Dr:
*Give normal skill gems a small skill tree that players can traverse through as they gain levels

*This would make skill gems deeper and more personalised, complimenting the support gem system

*It would also increase the depth of item trades

It's stronger with each level up actually , but except of that, yes they're same

Which limits their overall ability I guess (do you want a NUKE,NUKE or NUKE ?) and if so... most of the players will choose the best options for them. Expect to find Nuke Gems (Dmg/AoE).

Not bad idea, although I would make it as it's now + after X lvls some special perk/additional ability to it.

That was only a crude suggestion. Balance in such a thing would be a big consideration, and variety in what can be chosen on levelup would have to have viable options that arne't too jarring to the overall skill.
