Atlas passives changes mid-map

Does adding/changing an atlas passive during a map apply the effect instantly or do you need to start a new map for it to take effect?

For example; if I add a strongbox passive to my atlas in map before opening a strongbox, will that passive apply to the strongbox when opened, or is properties from atlas assigned when the map is created?
