Ritual altar near boss in Elder Guardian map breaking boss encounter

I activated a Ritual altar near the boss as the Elder came out of his portal to "claim" the map boss, but during the Ritual encounter the Elder sat idle and continued to sit idle after it was done, breaking the Elder Guardian encounter.

Follow up info, this was in a Canyon map where there are two bosses.
