Obtaining Vaal Breach

Wiki says I should try to corrupt portal gem while being in a map using breach craft from map device. I did so. Tried on 50-60 portal gems and none of them turned into vaal version. Am I missing something?

AFAIK the div card is the only way to get it now. Look on trade, all of them are 6% quality.

With Breach on the map device, you should be able to get one. Generally Vaal gems are a 1/4 outcome, but for some reason I'm pretty sure it's less than this. My experience in Abyss league (I think?) and the anecdotal sources in the wiki page put it at a tentative 12.5% chance.
If you Vaaled 50 portal gems at these odds, you would have a (1-1/8)^50 = 0.126% chance of not getting a Vaal Breach. Not impossible. However, given the fact that there are NO Vaal Breach gems on trade for the entire league with quality not equal to 6% (https://www.pathofexile.com/trade/search/Sentinel/aegVXyRCe, https://www.pathofexile.com/trade/search/Sentinel/pGDM67wh0), and the div card for it gives one with 6% (https://www.poewiki.net/wiki/The_Emptiness), it seems pretty likely that they cannot be created through normal means any more. |
