Latency Spikes every few seconds

Hi there,

I know there is alot around performance and everything this league, but I have just come back and am experiencing lag spikes every few seconds.

Listing options I have tried, to no change:
Completely removed and reinstalled the game
- Switched between Vulkan and DX
- Switched between V-sync, no vsync and FPS cap
- Tried different gateways all around the world

Connection is wired, not via power, but directly with ethernet cable.

Here are 3 WinMTR test I ran in Marketplace, creating a new instance every time to force a new connection.

https://pastebin.com/Bi5yJruk

I am no network engineer, could a smart one please advise me if this is an issue with my ISP and I need to contact them or if it is something at my or GGG's end.

For reference, my network goes as follows.

ISP Homehub (plusnet) > Netgear network switch > TP-Link Network Switch > My PC

I have tried connecting my Ethernet directly into the Homehub but the issue persists, so I am hoping that means the issue is not with my home network.

Any advice would be great

Thanks

Joey

All 3 WinMTR shows the same issue -->
dsldevice.lan - 2 | 73 | 72 | 0 | 88 | 1118 | 1 |
dsldevice.lan - 0 | 41 | 41 | 1 | 13 | 414 | 3 |
dsldevice.lan - 38 | 37 | 23 | 0 | 20 | 338 | 2 |

So sadly the issue is with your home setup.
Something really bad is going with the connection between your PC and this device.
It really looks like a totaly unstable WiFi connection.
You will need to check all cables, firmware used in all devices and so on.
Thanks so much for the quick reply,

I will delve into with of my devices is causing the issue.

Ill post an update

Thank you again
So, I removed the two network switches by now connecting directly to the Plusnet Homehub. Whilst it felt much smoother to play, it appears there are still some issues?

https://pastebin.com/7EvBReAw

So have I now ruled it down to the issue being either with the Homehub or the ethernet cable running through the ceiling?

Thanks
Power-cycle (full reboot) your Plusnet homehub. Switch it off for a few minutes, then power on and let it obtain ISP IP address etc. Run another WinMTR whilst playing PoE for at least 300 packets.

Is this better, worse, or the same?
😹😹😹😹😹
I do not and will not use TFT.

maybe check to see if there is a firmware upgrade for it maybe ?

Also check if there is any firewall / trafic inspection active on it that can curse this....

but as @xjjanie suggested - do the power cycle thing also.
Hey

So I have run the power cycle reset and it does seem to have resolved the issue.

If I am reading the trace correctly that is, game definitely felt smoother.

I guess 1% packet loss is acceptable.

Sorry to have bothered you with something seemingly so simple. As I only reset my router the other day, is honestly that normal to have to reset it often? Or could this be the source of an underlying issue with the network?

Sorry to ask dummy questions, I just haven't had to deal with any of this for many years so am really out of date.

edit: For continuity, a second test I ran since the reboot.

You still have the insane latency spikes -->
dsldevice.lan - 1 | 315 | 314 | 0 | 16 | 502 | 1 |
dsldevice.lan - 1 | 240 | 239 | 0 | 13 | 547 | 3 |

That is not normal for a cable connection. If there is any WiFi card in your pc, then make sure it's disable.

Also make sure that you have the lastest VENDOR driver (not microsoft) installed for your netcard in your pc + make sure the "dsldevice.lan" is using latest firmware.
Hey

Thanks for all the input so far

Disabled the Wifi in my newtwork settings to be certain, updated my Intel Netword Card firmware (Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (7) I219-V)

https://pastebin.com/GnyXZFaE

Still really bad ping.

I will run some more tests trying to identify problematic hardware.

I have a bit more info on the network in all incase this helps.

Plusnet 6-CRN Homehub >Ethernet cable through ceiling>

Netgear GS316 > TP-Link AC-750 > My PC

These are latest tests

https://pastebin.com/exJkKFKi

Ping seems to improve moving up the chain (slightly). However it is still really high considering on the bottom test the only thing in the Network is my PC.

So could this all be down to dsldevice.lan (homehub) being bad?

edit (game feels much better, nowhere near as many spikes, but this huge lag in the tests is concerning. Worth noting is I also experience similar spikes while playing other games, not just Path)
