Molten strike + multistrike damage lower than expected

Multistrike doesn't seem to be applying the repeat damage bonus to the projectiles. Replacing multistrike with elemental damage with attacks yields a pretty noticeable dps increase even though on paper multistrike should have a slightly higher multiplier.

There appears to be one more report of this from June of last year:

Hmm, I would say the multistrike ONLY works for the attack part of molten strike and not the projectile spawn.....
The description says "more damage" rather than "more melee damage" so I'd expect it to apply to the projectile and strike portions of the skill.

https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Multistrike_Support
Supports melee attack skills, making them repeat twice when used, targeting a random enemy each time.

So I guess no bug here......
According to wiki projectiles are not "melee attack" => only more attack speed

Its kinda shitty approach to skills since you can't really know such information until you check it in game or google/POB it.

Smite skill has same problem.

Hope POE 2 fill fix such disinformation problems somehow.

Yes, multistrike support melee attacks only, but the "more damage" part is generic as worded. Notice the difference between "supported skills deal 10% less attack damage" and "first repeat of supported skills deals 22% more damage".

There are no melee skills that aren't attacks so why would it specify "attack damage" for the less damage portion if all the damage modifiers only applied to the melee portion of the skill.

If it's intended that's fine, but they need to reword the skill description if so.

Edit: There are a lot of melee skills that inflict non-melee damage (which doesn't scale with melee bonuses) that would be affected by this:
1. Lightning strike spawns projectiles from the melee hit like molten strike.
2. Smite delivers a non-melee AoE hit along with the strike.
3. Viper strike and puncture inflict ailments that scale with ailment damage, not melee damage.
and so on.

But still, 3 attacks instead of 1 = more projectiles over the same period of time = more damage, no?
FYI, for people who find this thread, this was indeed a bug and it was fixed in Delirium:

Fixed a bug which caused skills with damaging effects that were disconnected from the initial skill use (such as Molten Strike, Fire Storm, Wild Strike, and a number of others) which were supported by effects that triggered multiple successive uses of the skill (Multistrike, Greater Spell Echo and Unleash) to not apply the support gem's damage penalty or enhancement to those delayed effects, or even to the successive skill uses. This resulted in less damage being dealt by several skills when supported by Multistrike than they were intended to deal, and more damage by skills supported by Greater Spell Echo and Unleash.
