Unknown Map Symbol

I just noticed the following symbols on the Atlas. The folks I'm playing with have no idea what these symbols are or what they stand for.

**Things we've ruled out**
1. Additional chance or guaranteed chance to spawn influence for a guardian/conqueror
1.a. Based on certain areas, and the amount of maps you need to gain influence, not all areas of the map have this symbol, or the same number of symbols (sometimes zero, this zone depicted has 4 of them).

Any help would be appreciated, and thank you in advance

Press Y (or Z depending on your layout) ingame and check the pantheon.

If you want to upgrade those, you need to run those marked maps and add a divine vessel to the map device to get the bosses soul and then hand it over to Sin.
