Hi, and welcome to my 5th build guide, Torstein's Icebreaker!

Change log 29.March
Spoiler

-Glorious Vanity jewel is causing jitters in life levels and very fast canceling of "full life"condition therefore making Damage on Full life gem not 100% reliable instead you will use Ruthless support.
New 6L setup Glacial Hammer - Multistrike - Melee Physical damage - Fortify - Elemental Damage with Attacks - Ruthless
Use Ancestral Call instead of Ruthless when mapping
-added beastcraft corruption update for the staff to 30% quality
-added Turbulent Catalyst for amulet
-updated pastebin

2.0 UPDATE accent on raising chaos resistance
-instead of Kaom's Heart body armour you will use rare Astral Plate (see item section)

added War Banner (big damage boost)
added Enlighten level 3
added Blood Magic so you can leap as much as you like
-passive tree optimized
-build get significant damage boost
-updated pastebin
Gotta say i'm playing it in Metamorph and i'm super satisfied with the build, it goes like a truck! :D

-IF YOU STILL WANT TO GO WITH KAOM'S HEART VERSION, POB IS ON PAGE 21

For the motivation to make this unpopular skill viable across the game-board I would like to thank exile Sidtherat and other participants of the topic "melee.. melee never changes" on the forum. Also I thank my friend and guildmate UnLovedOne for borrowing me currency all the time. xD

Build is based on the Glacial Hammer strike skill and (Marauder class)Berserker ascendancy. It's a complete off meta build with a skill that is played by such small number of players that poe.ninja is showing 0.0%. Yeah, you read that right 0.0%.
Still there? Probably wondering wtf is this now? Glacial Hammer lul? What's so special about it?

How about crushing the end-game with a most powerful freezing skill in the game as a true heavy hitting warrior or the north!

Pros&Cons
Spoiler

+ ~8.5K eHP (post video build update)
+Freezes everything that can be frozen, for like, 4-5 seconds...
+Culling strike at 30% of life of frozen monsters
+very high damage
+4 seconds Overleech (Life Leech effects are not removed at Full Life), capable of recovering 5K life in 1 second paired with Warcry of choice
+Passive Endurance and Power charge generation while mapping
+very tanky
+blows up packs with one click without Inpulsa
+Excels VS high tier rare monsters and bosses
+Flexible to modify to your taste (more offense or defense)
+Good delver
+50% Chaos resistance

-Can't do elemental reflect and no leech maps
-No leech mods only possible on lower tiers
-No passive regen. Doing Uber Labs is fine due to Warcry instantly recovering 25% of life. I did many even without life flask while chasing boot enchant[/span]
-Has 2-3 seconds windup from standstill to max dps on single target to generate full Blitz charges.

Videos
Spoiler
Some 3.9 action
Casual T16 boss and Metamorph on Awakening lvl 8
https://youtu.be/K9dec1K8NNI

Full run on a tough T16 map with very hard boss (which gets frozen so you can shit on him) and Metamorph on Awakening lvl 8
Hard notable mods:
-14% maximum player resistance
Enfeeble (which kicks in when im out of warding flask, so damage drop)
32% more monster life
+49% monster elemental resistance

these two bolded mods strait up cuts my dps by 81% compared to the "casual" T16 map

Path of Building for non cluster version

*When you are checking your dps in PoB make sure to edit one item and add this text:
WORKAROUND CALCULATIONS THAT ARE NOT AUTOCALCULATED BY POB
22% more damage
^^Multistrike calculation correction
15% more damage
^^From War Bringer ascendancy notable

Just passive tree:
www.poeurl.com/cHTM

In the bottom left corner of the Path of Building you have menu how to develop your passive tree.

Path of Building for cluster version
Spoiler

Pros:
+independent Rage generation, you can stand in your hideout and have 50 Rage
+a lot more dps due to Rage and Berserk

This is the rare cluster jewel i'm using. It's not difficult to craft but if you don't want to bother you can buy it. Also having the cluster jewel with extra jewel slot like this one saves 1 passive point.

How to craft it:
Start with the medium cluster jewel that has "15% increased warcry buff effect"

1. use Scouring orb to make it normal, then Transmutation to make it magic
2. spam alterations until you mob mentality or some other worthy notable
3. when you find desirable notable use Augmentation orb to add one more mod
4. use Regal orb to make item rare which will add one more mod

if you end up with wrong combo go back to step 1.
if you got Mob Mentality and something worthy great, if you got jewel socket too its poggers

Mob Mentality notable is mandatory. It gives:
-20% increased Warcry cooldown recovery speed
-You and party members gain 5 Rage when you use a warcry

Other notable points that you can use, in order of value:
-Warning Call
-Haunting Shout
-Provocateur
-Rattling Bellow

You don't have to spam Warcry manually just place it on left click this and it will autocast while moving or holding the key. Same trick applies to non cluster version, i just didin't know about it.

Possibilities with cluster jewels are endless but this is what i came up for now.

PASTEBIN
https://pastebin.com/MkFe3xHM

*passive tree is little different from non cluster version so be sure you respec it
*Also instead of Lightning Golem you will add Berserk gem!

WORKAROUND IS ADDED ON ASTRAL PLATE SO IF YOU ARE USING FORKED PATH OF BUILDING REMOVE IT

💪 Build discussion & mechanics
Spoiler
Build is based on pure melee namelocking skill Glacial Hammer. GH can be used only with maces, sceptres and staves which narrows possible weapon choices. I wanted to make this char good damage wise, be tanky and agile while playing. Choice of weapon landed on a Hegemony's Era staff
since it's a unique and easy to obtain.
Using 6L staff (two-hander) opens space of Kaom's Heart body armour which again gives flexibility on other gear choices while maintaining high life pool. Staff passive nodes on the tree are also very good providing very high crit chance, crit multiplier and passive Endurance charge generation.
Hegemony's Era staff has ~1,5 base attack speed (which is kinda slow but great for a staff) and to make it feel good I paired it with Berserker ascendancy to compensate attack speed.

So how does Glacial Hammer works?
It's a melee strike skill that converts 60% of your Physical damage to Cold. Every third successive strike has highest chance to freeze enemies (by default) as though dealing 390% more Damage. What this means is that third strike has chance to freeze as it has 4x more damage. Because of that you will be able to freeze enemies with very large life pool.
If an enemy is frozen and is on less than one third life, they will shatter when hit by Glacial Hammer.
Build has 80%+ chance to freeze on hit.
-35% increased Chill Duration on enemies
-29% increased Effect of Chill
-25% base freeze chance

GH adds +4 to base melee range and with 2H weapon like staff that has +13 to melee range it won't feel like having T-rex arms.

Winter Burial jewel gives you 2 valuable things:

-built-in melee splash that with the help of Herald of Ice and Ancestral Call support gem will blow up packs with one tap. Splash from this jewel will deal 100% of your hit cold damage, while Melee Splash support gem deals 40% less splash damage. That's op! Inpulsa explosions, without Inpulsa.

-25% phys to cold conversion which can only be found on Watcher's eye jewels otherwise. With this 25% and conversion from the gloves, we will make full physical to cold conversion on Glacial Hammer.

🛡️ Build defenses
Spoiler
-very high life pool ~8.5K (6+K life + 2.5K es) effective since you will leech Energy shield as life too (build is updated since video showcase)
-Overleech (leech not removed at full life) combined with Warcry can recover 6K life/s
-Fortify
-3 Endurance charges
-Immortal call
-Blind on hit
-Freeze & Chill
-24% attack block chance
-optional Basalt flask for additional 15% phys damage reduction

Active Skills
Spoiler
-Glacial Hammer

-Leap Slam for movement

-Frost Bomb
Cast it at the bosses to debuff them thru Cold Exposure reducing their cold resistance by 25%. Also counters the life regeneration of bosses by 75%.

-Enduring/Rallying Cry
Every time you use war-cry you will regain 25% of life and mana instantly. It will also give you a buff of increased 20% attack speed in next 4 seconds and 15% more damage in next 8s.

Enduring Cry: -(8-36) Endurance Charges granted per one hundred nearby enemies
Rallying Cry: -(140-178)% increased Damage per one hundred nearby Enemies
-(10-16)% increased Damage

-Blood Rage
Gives 16% increased attack speed when activated and one more Frenzy while mapping.

-War Banner
When charged after killing monsters and placed when bossfighting it will give you the Adrenaline buff

Items
Spoiler
6L is not mandatory to be in staff! You can buy 6L Astral Plate and fossil craft it and swap (utility) gems from body armour into staff.
**********************************************************************
Weapon
Spoiler

Build is based on a unique staff, Hegemony's Era. It's a very good unique staff and all the videos were recorded with it.

To upgrade your staff you can use Syndicate which is harder option to raise staff quality to 28%.
Easier option is to use beast "Craicic Vassal" to corrupt the staff to 30% quality. This will give decent damage boost.
*Just note you will need help from a friend to do this because you will need to put staff into the crafting window, therefore you can't fight the beast. Also try to Divine it a little to get better rolls before corrupting.
Staff will look like this.

Body Armour
Spoiler

Rare armour based, preferably Astral Plate base because of the free resistances it gives

It doesn't have to be linked all the way (3L can do). What we want from it are 6 gem sockets, life and as much elemental resistances possible! Resistances on the armour will make room to get Chaos res on other items. (Your main 6L can be body armour and utility gem setup you can put into 6 socketed staff)

Also when you are buying one it has too have free prefix!
You will then craft on bench "Gain 10% of maximum life as Energy Shield"

Stats to look for:
-min 135 life
-as much resistances as possible

*****************************************************************************

Amulet
Spoiler

The Pandemonius unique amulet is the expensive item but it's worth every penny. Not only that it gives 20% cold penetration it will blind everything (50% reduced accuracy rating of monsters and effectively 50% their chance to make critical strike).

Amulet is obtainable by farming Tul Breachlord. He has chance to drop The Halcyon amulet, which can be upgraded with Blessing of Tul to Pandemonius. Or you can simply buy it.

Anoint it with 2 Sepia and one Silver oil for "Fangs of Frost" (damage boost) or triple Golden oils "Soul of Steel" (more defense).

Use Turbulent Catalysts to raise penetration to 24%.
Use Blessing orbs to maximize Dexterity implicit value.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Budged option

Hyrri's Truth unique amulet. It will grant you level 22 Precision skill for 50% less mana reservation.
In that case you don't need accuracy on the rings or Precision gem!
Damage is lower compared to Pandemonius and you won't have "blind on hit" or max chill effect.

Belt
Spoiler

Soul Tether unique belt is mandatory, 3 Chaos orbs. Very powerful belt that will provide you Overleech (Life leech effects are not removed at full life). We are going to boost that leech with Vaal Pact keystone and Pain Reaver
ascendancy notable by 150%, providing you a shitload of (over)leech.

Rings
Spoiler

Rare rings, stats to look for:
-life
-elemental resistances and chaos resistance
-Accuracy min 300 on each ring if possible (you need total of ~550-600 to cap accuracy)

Death Rush is a cheap alternative to a rare ring although no Frenzy charge...

Rings must have open suffix to craft on the bench "+1 to minimum Frenzy charges" on both of your rings. This will guarantee 2 Frenzy charges that multiply your damage by 8% and give you some attack speed.
Use Blessing orbs to maximize implicit value of rings.

If you are using Hyrri's Truth amulet you don't need accuracy on the rings.

Best bases for helmet and boots are Intelligence ones because they will yield little more effective HP (base ES from items is higher and you still get life). Pure strength bases are totally fine though.

Helmet
Spoiler

Buy helmet with enchant min item base 85. Use Redeemer exalted orb to get influence. Craft it further with fossils.

Use Frigid and Pristine fossils with Potent resonators.

--------------------------------------------------------
Budget, any rare helmet with life and resistances.

Boots
Spoiler

When buying boots look for as much life, Elemental resistances and Chaos resistance you can afford.
Aim for the boots without movement speed and a free prefix so you can craft on bench hybrid mod" 20% increased movement speed & 12% chance to gain Onslaught on kill".

Spam the Uber Lab until you get the "damage penetrates 10% of enemy elemental resistance if you haven't killed recently"

Gloves
Spoiler

Best base are the Spiked Gloves because of the implicit.
Look for highest life, res and attack speed you can afford.

When buying gloves be sure they have open prefix so that you can craft "% of physical converted to cold" on the bench. Until you do the full conversion physical reflect maps won't be possible.

Use Blessing orbs to maximize implicit value of gloves.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Budget option any rare gloves with life, res and attack speed.

Jewels
Spoiler

Winter Burial goes to the bottom side of the tree. Socket it as soon as you get to the bottom area jewel socket.

-For the rare jewels (3 of them) aim for combination of these mods.
You gotta have at least 2 damage mods (with priority to crit multi) + life. 3 damage mods jewels are expensive just to note.

increased maximum life
global critical strike multiplier
melee critical strike multiplier
critical strike multiplier with two-handed melee weapons
critical strike multiplier with cold skills
critical strike multiplier with elemental skills
attack speed
attack speed with two-handed melee weapons
attack speed with staves
increased damage
increased damage with staves
increased cold damage
increased elemental damage
increased melee damage

-Glorious Vanity with "in the name of Doryani" mod. Seed (number) doesn't matter.
Jewel goes in the area with Mind Over Matter keystone which will be changed to "Corrupted Soul".
It will give 20% of Maximum Life as Extra Maximum Energy Shield.

Flasks
Spoiler

Make sure that you have these 3 suffixes on magic flasks:
of Staunching (on life flask)
of Heat
of Warding
Choice is your between Basalt(more deff) and Quicksilver(more speed) flasks. Also if you will be using Basalt aim for Chemist's prefix with minimum 23% reduced charges used. That way you will be able to use it twice.

Ascendancy
Spoiler

Marauder class - Berserker ascendancy

Take points in this order:
1.Warbringer
Recover 25% of Life and Mana when you use a Warcry
100% increased Warcry Cooldown Recovery Speed
100% increased Warcry Duration
If you've Warcried Recently, you and nearby allies
have 20% increased Attack Speed
15% chance to deal Double Damage if you've Warcried in the past 8 seconds

2.Pain Reaver
2% of Attack Damage Leeched as Life
2% of Attack Damage Leeched as Mana
50% increased Maximum total Recovery per second from Life Leech if you've taken a Savage Hit Recently
25% increased Attack Speed if you've been Hit Recently

3.Flawless Savagery
50% increased Critical Strike Chance for Attacks
+25% to Critical Strike Multiplier
Adds 20 to 30 Physical Damage to Attacks if you've
dealt a Critical Strike Recently

4.Blitz
Gain a Blitz Charge on Critical Strike
2% more Attack Speed per Blitz Charge
10% reduced Critical Strike Chance per Blitz Charge
+20 to Maximum Blitz Charges

Gem links
Spoiler
Exact gem levels and quality you can see in PoB

6L Glacial Hammer (level 21 preferably, gives +1 to range)- Elemental Damage with Attacks - Multistrike - Fortify - Melee Physical damage - Ruthless

For mapping use Ancestral Call gem instead of Ruthless

4L Herald of Ice - Hatred - Precision level 5 - Enlighten level 3

4L Cast When Damage Taken level 15 - Immortal Call level 15 - Enduring/Rallying Cry - War Banner

4L Leap Slam - Blood Magic - Faster Attacks - Physical to Lightning level 1

3L Cast When Damage Taken level 10 - Frostbite level 13 - Summon Lightning Golem level 12(or Ice Golem if you have problem with accuracy)

No need to link these 3:
-Blood Rage level 13
-Frost Bomb
-Ancestral Protector

Although Glacial Hammer has 100% Cold conversion Leap Slam has so much physical damage that I regularly killed myself on phys reflect maps. To avoid that Physical to Lightning level 1 gem is linked to Leap Slam to convert 50% of Phys to Lightning.

Leveling
Spoiler
First off I can't recommend this build as a league starter simply because it will feel slower and lacking damage compared to spells without Tabula and good leveling weapons. Also some unique items will be required. It's viable but i'm not gonna push you into league start with it saying it will kicks ass leveling, but if you want, go for it. Honey Badgers don't give a s*it. xD
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pick up at Twilight Strand all blue items that drop. When you get to Lioneye's Watch sell them and buy Glacial Hammer gem, Rustic Sash belt.
Go dual wield with 2 sceptres/maces.

3L Glacial Hammer - Ruthless - Chance to bleed
swap Ancestral Call with Chance to bleed at level 4 (use Chance to Bleed for Act 1 bosses)
Also get Ancestral Protector gem (totem)

At around level 10-12 buy staff from vendor with most dps.
Also you will get Leap Slam and Rallying Cry (buffs damage and helps with mana) as quest reward after killing Brutus.

From level 13 if you can get unique staff "Pillar of The Caged God".

~level 20 buy Melee Physical damage support gem
4L Glacial Hammer - Ruthless - Chance to Bleed/Ancestral Call - Melee Physical damage

After quest Intruders in Black
Act 2
add Herald of Ice

After Root of the Problem quest in Act 2
get Blood Rage gem

When you get jewel socket at the bottom of the tree add Winter Burial unique gem.

After A Fixture of Fate quest
Act 3
from Siosa buy Hatred And Frost bomb gem. You will get as reward Fortify support.

4L Glacial Hammer - Fortify - Melee Phys damage - Ruthless / Ancestral Call

Finish normal Labyrinth when you get at least 1000 life and decent elemental resistances.

Around lvl 40 link Cast when damage taken - Immortal Call

2nd Lab min 2000k life and capped res
3rd Lab min 3000k life and capped res
Uber Lab min 4500k life, capped res and some decent staff

After you kill Malachai in Act 4 you will take as reward Multistrike.

5L Glacial Hammer - Fortify - Increased Melee physical damage - Multistrike - Ruthless/ Ancestral Call

As soon as you get Soul Tether belt, spec into Vaal Pact keystone! Belt should be cheap and is important.

5L Glacial Hammer - Fortify - Increased Melee physical damage / Ancestral Call - Multistrike - Damage on Full life

From this point follow the PoB.

6L Glacial Hammer - Fortify - Increased Melee physical damage / Ancestral Call - Multistrike - Damage on Full life - Elemental damage with attacks

Dont forget to link Leap Slam with Phys to Lightning when in maps or you can kill yourself on Physical reflect.

Weapons for leveling:
-Pillar of the caged God, will cary you early. Best option is when you feel dps is falling of to upgrade it to a rare staff with most dps you can afford/equip at current level.
At level 49 before Hege i'm using this staff which costed me 1c.

Belt: Soul Tether! Equip it after you finish 2nd Labyrinth

To avoid Accuracy problem use Hinekora's Sight amulet before you reach the maps.
Add Precision and level it to level 5 not more!

Rest of the gear for leveling, rare items with focus on life and resistances.

Tabula can be farmed at Act 9 blood aqueducts by reseting and spamming the instance (hold ctrl and click on waypoint to reset it.)
Or you can buy cheap corrupted 6L 6 red sockets body armour.

Glad i could help :)
love it :D

(one thing, im sure you used pristine fosil + frigid on the helmet, not prismatic + frigid)

Oh thx for telling me! I totally missed that...

Glad you like it! :D
Good job man, that one expensive setup though ... (the chest and the amulet, mainly)

Which is part of the 'melee problem', you have to (usually) invest much more into the character to make it 'work' to begin with.

But well done anyway, seems like a solid character
I'm wondering how it would like on another ascendancy.

Can you share a link to the passive tree on the website ? Faster then loading the full path of building, and checkable outside of the home computer :)
SSF is not and will never be a standard for balance, it is not for people entitled to getting more without trading.
Build looks nice, but I have a more general question.
Have you tested the warcry notables with this build or any other berserker?
Do you think it's not worth investing in them? If not both, then just Words of Glory maybe?

Tyty :)

It's not really that expensive, at least it wasn't. Pandemonius is the most expensive item here, even late league.
This corrupted Kaom's i payed 80c and you can go with the regular one no prob. I just didn't know what to expect so I bought gear early while leveling cuz I was like "better gear up good" haha.
Hegemony's Era I had to link myself because there were 0 6L's on the whole server lol. People are vending it and no one was linking it.
For what the build offers building price is ok. Helmet and boots can be fossil crafted. It's not mandatory that you go strait up and pay market price.

Passive tree added :)

Yeah i'we tested it. Those are good nodes for 2 reasons.
Obvious one is the QoL with instant casting and lower cooldown (better life recovery).
Second one is that it's effectively adding to dps by not interrupting your attacks since casting a cry takes 0.25s i think.

Thanks, I'm trying to put together a warcry zerker, but I'm not sure it's worth the 6 extra points on the tree. Sadly, none of the warcries currently in the game that good, imo. Anyway, I don't want to hijack your thread :)

It's ok, it's related to the build.
Battle Cry node is worth taking. Cry's with Berserker and War Briger are underestimated.

see this:
Rallying Cry is a warcry skill that taunts nearby enemies and grants increased damage based on the number of nearby enemies and mana regeneration to you and your allies.

Instances: Rallying Cry can have an indefinite number of hidden stacks active, of which each loses its Duration naturally, but only the strongest one is shown as active buff, getting replaced by the second strongest when running out.
Rallying Cry
(140-178)% increased Damage per one hundred nearby Enemies
(10-16)% increased Damage
Pretty good damage boost just from 1 Cry on top of other effects!
