First Blood pack is a no brainer. You get full coins value, MTX and a free tab.
Spend coins on getting the basic stash tabs: 1) Currency tab 2) Map Tab 3) other tabs as you feel like it. A $60 purchase should get you all the tabs you would want. After that, you buy extra tabs for storage, and any cosmetic that catches your eye. If you put in another $40, you would have more tabs than an experienced player would ever use. The days when we could use 80 premium tabs are behind us. We used to have to store stacks and stacks of currency rather than just have a single tab that holds it all. |

If you want to enjoy the loot hunt on a basic level stash tabs are pretty much MANDATORY.

Also get a pet. Yes, of no direct play value but it's definitely more fun to roam the wilds of Wraeclast and Oriath with a companion. Don't leave Lioneye's Watch naked and alone.
Note: Make sure you get the appropriate feed for your pet so it will live a long and healthy life. I got my super cute Kiwi in Closed Beta PoE (only available then) and today it still faithfully and dutifully follows me wherever I go thanks to a healthy diet of Kiwi Chow. :)   "You've got to grind, grind, grind at that grindstone..."
