Conc Effect useless on Smite?

The Gem says that if the enemy is hit with the melee attack portion they can't be hit by the aoe blast. So this would actually make it the first AOE melee skill that it is actually completely worthless on? Or is is still somehow worth taking?

Yup, it's useless.

PoB keeps crying for it because it thinks that it applies to the main hit, but it doesn't.

With just multistrike attached to it, Smite has already pretty good pack clear (for a melee attack, that is), and you're certainly not lacking in damage against normal monsters once you have solid gear.
What it's really lacking is single target.
And conc effect does nothing for single target because the AoE part doesn't hit single target.

Smite
+ multistrike
+ elemental damage with attacks
+ elemental focus
+ melee phys (if phys based, otherwise added lightning or whatever)
+ damage on full life / lightning pen / phys to lightning (if not full conversion already) / ruthless
