Ball lightning?

Hey, there. I was playing PoE the other day and I really liked the visuals of Ball Lightning. Well today, I was tinkering around with the skill in PoB, and I was wondering if anyone with more experience would mind giving their thoughts on the matter. My question is according to Path of Building, if I simply swap out Ball Lightning for Arc that damage went from approx 140,000 to over a million DPS, respectively. Is there that much of a discrepancy in the damage between the two skills? Or does PoB not factor the "correct" DPS for Ball Lightning? Ultimately, I'm just curious. I'll probably still make the build because I think the skill looks cool, but just wondering what gives.

Also let me say that I'm a casual player overall and mostly enjoy creating and playing a variety of builds.

Thanks very much,
Congo

The damage PoB shows for Arc is for the first target hit. Due to the scaling on chains remaining, all other targets will take gradually less and less damage.

It is basically impossible to get accurate DPS numbers for Ball Lighting on paper due to the skill's mechanics. Since the ball damages enemies as long as they are in the area, your real damage depends on how long you can keep them there. So things like projectile speed, knockback, or even movement patterns of the target can have a significant impact on your "true" DPS.

Any static calculation will necessarily be just an estimate. I don't know what simplifications PoB makes, but I would not be surprised if it was off by an order of magnitude from what you'll actually experience in game.

All that being said, Arc got a rework in the last leaguespansion, while Ball Lightning has not been touched in years. Think of it what you will, but updates do in general tend to make skills more powerful.)

actually ball lightning got massive buffs last patch
The dps in PoB for Ball Lightning assumes only 1 hit per cast. Ball Lightning hits 6.66666666667 times per second, moves at a baseline speed of about 48 units/second and has an baseline area of 22 units. Assuming you take Slower Projectiles and have no AoE scaling BL moves at 24 units/second with 22 units AoE, so at literally point blank range (not the poe mechanic) it stays in range for about 0.916 seconds which equates to 6.11111 hits/cast (ignoring the hit breakpoints), so 6.11111 times the dps that is listed in PoB. The more or less maximum dps for a static target would be double that amount (12.22222 times the dps listed in PoB) if you cast it while being 22 units from the enemy away. Which of course can be further enhanced by increasing the AoE of your BL. Also remember that BL can be precast for Strongboxes, Breaches, Abysses, Bossfights....

Thanks for the responses. As I had thought, the skill's actual damage is much higher than the PoB prediction. This will definitely make it more encouraging to try out this skill. :-)
