Help with poison/bleed mechanics and support gems please?

Does the "base damage" that bleed and poison use mean before any passives and support gems?
Which support gems should I be using? I was under the impression that with the new system the Maim Support gem would NOT increase poison damage, but it apparently does when I check my character info. Is this correct? If it does increase poison's damage, why is there a need for something like the Melee Physical Damage Support to say it increases bleed and poison damage? What makes them different? Does the Brutality Support gem prevent poison from applying? Would the Vile Toxins Support increase bleed damage after stacking up poison? Thanks for any answers Last bumped on Aug 21, 2017, 2:37:53 AM

I'm looking for some answers regarding poison as well. I believe I have some answers for you as well. So, I'm going to give you my tentative answer and then add my questions to the thread so I don't have to start a new one.
I've been using Maim. From what I can tell, it increases the direct damage output but not the poison damage. I tested Brutality. From what I can tell, it stops you from poisoning monsters with the attack skill that you have it linked to. Regarding Vile Toxins Support, based on the wording, it would increase the hit damage. If increasing the final hit damage will increase the bleed damage then, yes, it will increase the bleed damage. So, here are my questions. 1. Do Critical Strike/Critical Damage nodes in the passive tree or gear have any effect on poison damage? How about Global Critical Strike/Global Critical Damage? 2. Does added integer damage increase the base for poison? For example, if I have added physical damage on a quiver or added chaos damage on a ring, would that increase my poison damage? Thanks. |

" That's what I thought. Is the character sheet wrong then? When I remove my Maim Support it reduces the poison damage per second on my skill. " I believe it does, but I'm not too sure. The patch notes say " so depending how you interpret it as "added damage" or "added damage of the skill" |

I don't know if the Maim issue is a display error or a bug (or I'm simply wrong about how Maim works). There has been at least one post about the properties from the Master Fletcher node not showing up correctly in the character screen - again, could be either simply a display error or a bug depending on how the character screen is coded.

1. Brutality prevents anything other than physical damage, including chaos.
2. Vile Toxins only increases poison damage, and damage from HIT. It won't do anything to non-poison DoT. 3. DoT originally has 150% damage on critical damage. Increasing critical strike chance can increase the chance of having that 150% damage. However, unless you pick Perfect Agony in passive, critical damage won't do anything to ignite/poison/bleed. 4. Any flat damage added can benefit the DoT caused by that skill as long as it's the right type of flat damage. 5. Maim is a great skill for physical damage. "Enemies Maimed by Supported Skills take (10-14)% increased Physical Damage" can't benefit poison but the more physical damage can if your poison is caused by physical damage. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Thanks, but how do you know that the More modifier from Maim Support applies to the base for poison? Neither the Wiki nor the cited footnote were particularly helpful in explaining it.

Thanks for the info. But could you explain this part a bit more?
" If this is the case, why do the Melee phys/Phys projectile/Ruthless support gems say they increase bleeding and poison? Are those more modifiers to bleed and poison on top of the physical damage they already increase? Or do the more physical modifiers on those gems NOT affect bleed and poison, while Maim's does? What about increased phys damage bonuses from passives or items - do those affect poison damage as well? If I were to make elemental damage able to poison, would elemental damage increases through passives or support gems increase the poison damage? I was under the impression that it wouldn't...
