I switch weapons and Ancestral Protector is greyed out. Why?

I switch from a physical one-handed weapon to a wand to get more spell damage on my CWC Firestorm but then this happens:
  Nothing shows that I can't use AP (greyed out) with a wand. Doesn't say I have to have a melee weapon equipped to use AP but nothing else makes sense. What am I missing? "You've got to grind, grind, grind at that grindstone..." Necessity may be the mother of invention, but poor QoP in PoE is the father of frustration. Ancestral Protector is a melee totem, that uses your weapon. If you have a ranged weapon equipped, it cannot use your weapon, so you cannot use it.
