Do [Controlled Destruction] and [Increased Critical Hit Damage] gems cancel eachother?

New player here. I'm following the blade vortex guide from Lifting and noticed that these two gems are linked for the damage setup. https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1739089

Controlled Destruction
Increased Critical Hit Damage

One reduces crit chance by 100% (but gives 35% spell damage) and the other buffs the crit damage by 87%.

To me it would seem counter intuitive to buff crit damage when you have a 0% crit chance.

How do these work together?

Controlled destruction has reduced crit chance, not less. That build has 365% increased crit chance on tree and 63% on gear, so the net effect after controlled destruction is 328% increased crit chance. The more damage multiplier on controlled destruction is well worth it.

Also, crit chance can normally not go below 5%. A few skills have no crit chance to begin with. Not that stacking crit multiplier with only 5% chance is very effective.

Reduced and Increased modifiers stack additively;

More and Less modifiers stack multiplicatively;

Almost all Spell Damage builds want to use Controlled Destruction. If they don't stack crit, it's free damage; crit builds would usually stack around 800% increased critical strike chance to 1600% increased critical strike chance,

meaning that 800-100% -> 700% increased or 1600% -> 1500% increased is not a big impact.

http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com is something all players should have bookmarked.

Taken from Controlled Destruction Support:
"
Controlled Destruction cannot lower the critical strike chance of a spell below 5%.

Critical strike
"
Critical chance cannot exceed 95%, with the exception of Trypanon inventory or using a Diamond Shrine. Likewise, with the exception of the keystone passive skill Resolute Technique, critical chance has a minimum of 5% and cannot be reduced below this, even with modifiers that reduce critical chance such as Controlled Destruction Support inventory Destruction Support.

The countless times I mistook my MTX pet for prey... huehehehe
