[2.3]The One from Tesla battalion (simple and stupid guide to aurora/mjolnyr tank)

At first some warnings!
0)This thread is under construction currently and will be expanded.
1)English isn't my native so any mistake pointing will be greatly appreciated. And this is my first guide.
2)This build isn't interesting, complicated, WOW inspiring or something like this. Exactly like it says on the tin.
3)This build is still highly viable for any end-game content, facetank (normal)Atziri without any problem and clear with decent speed.
4)Not too expensive, but not cheapest either - build requires 3 "1.5 ex" unique items and some decent but cheap(10-40c each, excluding chest) yellows.
5)Playstile is, well, boring. Really boring. Even coffee cup boring. The bright side is that almost at any time, even under 2-3 huge packs, you can just go AFK and make that cup without fear of losing 10% exp. And everything but your character will be dead when you return. Just beware corrupting blood.

And if you still, for some reason, want to read then welcome to Tesla Troops!

Who we are - pros and cons

+We are tanky. Braindead afk-tanky against most thing. Close to immortal against big packs even if you play with eyes closed.
+We have decent AOE clear speed. Clear half of the screen with one button press.
+"Easy"(t11 and below) maps can be cleared with minimal player input. And even less with CWDT+lightning warp.
+We can facetank Atziri without dodging, flasking and other nonsense.

-Our life is boring. We just walk and randomly spam left button. Sometimes right one. No kiting, no dodging, pots are there only to remove corrupting blood.
-Relaxing. Yes, it's bad. You can quickly lose your skill in our ranks.
-Bad single target damage. Bosses with high regeneration like Wasteland one can waste lots of time.
-Hard limits. Cause of almost zero player input most fights are simple gear checks. And when you loose them... you loose them.
-Can be so much more - there are lots of things that can be used, like endurance charges, "good" flasks etc. But I'm to lazy to use more than 2 buttons - mouse ones - and so they aren't. I will write about them, but don't use them myself.

What do you need to join - items
Sorry, but equipping recruits can't be handled by poor funding, so you must bring you weapon and armour with you. And as bare minimum you will need.
1)Mjolnyr. Non-legacy one. It's even rather cheap - can be found for 1 ex.

2)Aegis Aurora - non-legacy too. Slightly more expensive - 1.5 ex.

3)Astramentis - 1.5 ex.

4)Repentance - 1 ex.

Mjolnyr is our heart, soul and spirit - with it you can fill the air with so much lightnings that any arc mage will cry in a corner.
Aegis Aurora ES regen on block with 75% block chance will make you invincible against small hits(less than 3-4 % of your armor after mitigation).
Astramentis is necessary evil for int and dex requirement of skills and gear, especially Mjolnyr and Repentance.
And, lastly, repentance will give 4-th link to Mjolnyr so the question "What's better for Mjolnyr - Iron Will or Lightning Penetration?" could be answered "both"
In other slots you need generic rare items with high HP, armour/evasion and strength. Most of resistances would be handled by passive nodes and jewels, so despite high str/life/armor price of rares should remain adequate.
My Gear

Basic theory of tamed lightning - skills, links and passives

There are two main skills - first for pack clearing and second for killing single target in time, that don't measure in eons.
First is Lightning Strike - remember that you can attack "empty space" with it to send waves of lightnings into enemies from good angle and position, where all hits will trigger mjolnyr and send even more electricity in the form of Arcs. This skill also dips as a ranged option against things we really don't want to come nearby - mostly those exploding kamikaze
Second is Molten Strike - it launch balls of magma around the target. Primary target CAN be hit by extra projectiles and so "pseudo-shotgunned" with mjolnyr procs from it. Average number of hits depend of target size, will write about it in depths below.
Important support gem worth mentioning is Life Gain on Hit - since both attacks usually trigger huge number of hits per second LGoH become way more effective that life steal - it's instant, it doesn't depend on damage done, so work even against immune target, it simply have greater value of hp/sec.
LS links

You really NEED only 2 links for Lightning Strike to do it work -
Multistrike and Life Gain on Hit, through anything else, like Greater Multiply Projectiles, Faster Attack or Fortify will help

MS links and details

Since Molten Strike is our "melee" option it really require Fortify. Also it need Multistrike and Life Gain on Hit for obvious reason. And, of cause, Greater Multiply Projectiles are indispensable. If you haven't 5 link armor yet Fortify can be excluded, but you will need some other attack to gain it then. Like 4-linked Lightning Strike.

Some numbers about Molten Strike, target size and average number of hits
Balls from Molten can land between 5 to 20 units from the target and have radius of 8. Look like "inner" radius of 5 greatly prevent shotgunning, but actually no target have size of 0. Radius of 2 is a radius of player and most powerful monsters are way bigger.
With GMP Molten launch 7 projectiles, so even against player sized enemy in average there will be 3.625 hits, including main attack. Against something bigger, such as most bosses, there will be a lot more - +0.4375 hit per 1 size increase(up to 8 at radius 12).

Skills in Mjolnyr

Mjolnyr have a chance to proc every skill in it when you hit something with it. Even with "secondary" effects of melee attack like Lightning Strike projectiles. You have maximum 3 sockets in Mjolnyr, ofc they all should be linked.
For this build best spells for Mjolnyr is Arc - 2 Arc gems to be precise with lightning penetration support. As a single support gem it give most damage of all even against low resist target and more than can double it against hight resist one(at 75% resist we only do 25% of damage, but with penetration it become "only" 38%, allowing as to do 62% of tooltip).

Other skills worth mentioning
Tempest Shield - since activating it "by hand" is too much work it should be linked with lvl1 Cast when Damage Taken - so it will activate after first non-blocked hit. Just be sure to have tempest shield be low anough lvl to work with lvl 1 cast when damage taken. If you have Improved Item Quantity.. you probably find nothing interesting in this guide, but anyway, you could link it with Culling Strike to Tempest Shield.
Reckoning and Vengeance - good skills that make counterattacks, which proc mjolnyr, apply curses with Curse on Hit and sustain if linked with Life Gain oh Hit. For latter better use Vengeance since it work on hits that you didn't block, which means they could cause some damage and healing will be right in when needed most.
There are also one important aura - Grace. With Iron Reflex it give tons of armour. Others should be switched depending on situation. Purity of Fire(or lightning) for Atziri and other heavy fire(or lightning) bosses. Purity of Elements on "Elemental Weakness" maps. Determination when in danger of high physical damage boss. And Wraith or dual Heralds when danger is low for high clear speed. Switch your auras depending on map.
Mobility skill of choice - I prefer Lightning Warp, but Leap Slam is fine too, if you are into that. I just hate jumping in heavy armour.
Passive Tree

Everything is simple here - take life, armour, resistances. And, of cause, block. Block nodes from Duellist, Marauder and Templar are just enough to max block with tempest shield and painforged. Templar starting notables are both good and give so much needed int for Mjolnyr, so we cah have less from gear, so travel to them asap. Iron Skin and Resolute Technique are both mandatory, but Unwavering Stance isn't advised - first it require 3 points to take and second with huge life pool stun isn't our problem, while 5% evasion is better than nothing. And you can always wear Kaom's roots.
In Ascendance everything is even more straightforward - choose Gladiator and take painforged, then versatile combatant, then.. whatever for now, but go for Blood in the Eyes when 8 point would be available for that 6% damage reduction.
Gladiator, currently, is the simplest way to get 100% spellblock and max "normal" block, leaving item slots free for more defence. Also it's really defensive minded, but add good damage against blooded enemies(and bosses will always be, while trash mobs die to fast anyway to care).
Here is mine tree

Our life before - leveling

Nothing interesting even there. Till lvl 60 you can play like any normal tank with block and one handed mace. Sunder or some other melee skill of choice will carry you to 60. Build have good amount of life and block nodes so surviving till you can equip mjolnyr and aurora shouldn't be hard.
After that simply farm Dried Lake(1-st location in act 4 after you find town) till lvl 65-68 or so and go farm Crypt Maps. First they are relatively easy map for leveling and farming and second there can drop one important divination card - Celestial Justicar. Collect 6 of them and get 6-link astral plate. Drop couple alchemy and then of chaos orbs on it until it have decent stats and you are set. While really RNG dependant it's simple and cheap way to get a decent chest - most important of your rare items. Check all chest ans barrels in Crypt - they can drop card too.

FAQ or someting like it

1)Q- Why you use double arc? It's bad! Discharge is better.
A- It is. With Voll's Devotion and Romira. Voll is really expensive and give less stats so we need more int from tree and gear. And if you CAN afford Voll you, probably, know what you are doing are read guides only for fun, not for useful info. Also double arc is way better for those with bad PC, since discharge have too much graphic effects. And without Voll double arc is better since good rare ring is way better than Romira.

2)Q- Is this even a build? It's so simple it look like a work of Captain Obvious.
A- Yeah, I know. I warned you like 2 times.

3)Q- All your gear, passive tree and auras are defensive. Where does damage come from? And what is your DPS?
A-
Spoiler
You can't calculate DPS of a mjolnyr, but let's assume 6 hits per Molten Strike against huge single target like Atziri.
Each hit can trigger 2 Arc with 30% chance each, so we can simply add 60% of Arc damage to every hit to determine it's damage and then calculate DPS. Ofc this will be only "average" number since too much RNG is involved. Lvl 20 arc does 460 base damage. Let's say we have 100% increased damage from passives(58%)+Gratification Violence(30%)+some random 10% jewel mod. Then another 120-140% from Iron Will. And 10% from quality penetration gem. 460*3.5*0.6=~950. Molten Strike itself have around 2200 DPS and 3 attack per second for main hit - let's double that cause of small hits of magma balls. And we have 4400+3*6*950=~25 000 DPS. Not that high, but this is low estimation. Real DPS is higher(around 30-35k from my Atziri killing speed estimation), Herald of Storm or Wraith can boost it greatly and it doesn't matter anyway since 95% bosses can't heal so will die sooner or later.
DPS against packs can't be calculated at all, since there are to many variables, but they melt fast, really fast, due to +1 chain from mjolnyr work with Lightning Strike, which proc mjolnyr too, Arc chaining back and forth etc.

4)Q- There are not enough info to be called a guide. Should be more detailed.
A- Yes, I know. It will be expanded soon. With screenshot and such. But this is written from work, where I don't have PoE to make those screenshots.

5)Q- You should really use Doryani's Fist, not Mjolnyr for a build under this art!
A- I wish I can, I wish I can...

Looking for something different than being an arc witch for prophecy, so respeccing & playing some old toons - loving this so far even though I haven't got the foggiest what I am doing.
ign: Kza_Godai
what does our damage comes from? i mean what is our main stat, to have more dmg? elemental damage, or phisycal? (i mean what weapon should i use, and what stats on other items if i can, while i dont have the mjolner)
Strongly considering trying out this one ´(Once I get my mirror sold...)

Do you think this build can do uber labyrinth?
T15 maps?
.~*sweep is the meta*~.
First sorry for abandoming this, problems at work(
Second - without mjolnyr this wouldn't work, plain and simple, sadly.. If you mean "before 60" then use.. whatever. Just grind to 60lvl through pain and suffering. But after that you just must have mjolnyr for this build, since this is, well, mjolnyr build. Main stat for damage is "str though iron will" from Repentance and penetration support gem and them some attack speed from.. whatever. And mjolnyr ofc. Nothing more is needed for damage, through you can also use herald of thunder.

Don't know about uber lab, didn't visit it yet. T15 aren't that hard if you have a shred of reaction/skill... but I haven't(and this is the main reason I play aurora facetank). T14 are easy, trough, just a bit too slow on bosses. Just remember - "Don't flinch. Waste of good hittig time" - know how much you can facetank and if you can - just tank, don't bother dodging.
Which bandit?

Lvl 66: Current Gear atm, enjoying that face tanking life (:

The Arc Spam makes my gtx 980ti lag on a humongous mob.

Obviously need more Life rolls and Repentance but im doing fine atm :D

I took
Oak
Kraityn
Oak

for my bandits

For Leveling, I rushed all the block nodes and used these items as soon as they were available to me.

Face Breaker (Shield Charge)
Solaris Lorica / Wall of Brambles (Infernal Blow + Melee Splash + LGoH/LifeLeech/FasterAttacks + Multi Strike)
High Armor Shield / Titucius' Span (Ancestral Warchief)

Face Tanked everything except Cruel Malachai :D
The version without faster attacks is kinda slow vs single targets and bosses.
I will add my version of the build here, since I had the same idea, and the builds are mostly the same. Mine is with Voll's Devotion, and since I liked it so much, I splurged on a legacy Mjölner.

Build

My gear
Spoiler

I also use an Inutitive Leap (by the Templar) and Brute Force Solution to convert strength to int down by the Duelist

This build plays itself, and is my "Reach lvl 100 without dying" build. Facetanks Uber Izaro and his dog (literaly, just keep right button down), and does the same to tier 15 maps, except Core Malachai.

It has the same tankability with 30% Mjölner, but less damage, and can be played for sure up to tier 12-14 with dual arc and some other chest.

As long as I am not one-shotted, basically nothing can kill me (but beware of degen+vulnerability)

The plan is simple: win! If you do not win, you did not follow the plan
Hi

Finaly a super good lazy build!! i love to play without to have to dodge things look at rare mods on mobs i love go yolo facetank anything it's so good!

The coffee break is no joke you can realy afk while killing all packs xD

And for the first time i down UberIzaro!! it took some time like all big boss but its fun to be like"you gona die not know but soon and you know it"

Here's my gear:

Is a legacy aegis worth the 18ex?

ps: The Lightning armor pack look design for your build xD
