A guide has been posted here which covers general aspects and strategies of racing.

A summary of Time based events:

Time based events are designed to create a competitive environment where players compete not by character experience, but by their ability to progress through the game and complete specific objectives, such as killing bosses.

The boss required to be defeated for this race is: Merveil, located in The Cavern of Anger.

  • The time recorded is based from the beginning of the race, not when your character is created.
  • Characters will not appear on the ladder until they have completed the objective.
  • Characters are not required to have completed the time based objective in order to receive points for the other objectives, such as points awarded for reaching certain levels.
  • Characters who die after completing the objective, will still be counted for receiving reward points except for the level-specific prizes.
  • Points are awarded at the end of the race, do not delete your characters until they have been moved to the permanent leagues.

Boss Kill Prizes:
The following are awarded to all players to complete them, not just the first.
  • Kill Brutus in Normal difficulty: 1 Reward Point.
  • Kill Merveil in Normal difficulty: 3 Reward Points.

hmm, reward points for levels seem to be off.
Why should I get 3 points for lvl 7 or 5 points for lvl 11?

I am bad at racing but I can kill brutus in 40-50 min (usually at lvl 10). Add some minutes to play safe and get lvl 11 and everyone can have 6 racepoints in one hour when you get 3 or 4 in a normal race.

Descent races are also easier to collect points, I'd like to see some "even out" between race types. Not only it's matter of luck to be at home to play, it's also even more luck to get a "good" race type.

The reason for the difference is due to adding Act 4, and nothing more. Taking out/merging maps, and lowering the levels = the reason for the lower level cap for max points. Goal is to kill Merveil, not play the whole 90 minutes to level 15+. If you can now kill her at around level 10-11, then why play more if the main achievement is complete? Like you mentioned some can make it to Merveil within 20-30 minutes, and others take the whole 90 minutes. All depends on skill level, and I find in either case this being great and nothing to change. It is nicer for newer players to gain some alternate artwork items, and play more of the game. Also having 1 point for killing Brutus is very nice add on too. Gives a newer or slower player more incentive to play a longer timed event. I agree that some races the time put in doesn't seem to equal as much as other races, but it is your choice going off the rewards to enter that race. You might get 8 points for a Brutus kill, and about the same for Piety that is a 4 hour event. Use your time wisely, and enter races that give higher points for time spent. If you notice each race has a cap of points around 5-10 points for the core/level achievement. When you notice that, then I think the points are spread out correctly. The main goal of an online game is to have more playing, and GGG has done well to achieve that goal.

+1 for a well-composed comment on a race event thread.

I hadn't even caught that Brutus was an extra point. =0[.]o=

Hi, this will be my first Merveil race, I had a look around the forums but couldn't find any guides on good routes and decent builds to use. Could anyone point me to a post if they know one?

If you're looking to just get the easy 9 points for merv, brut and lvl, just pick templar, start with magma orb until lvl 4 when you pick up flame totem, then use a mix of both. I normally just go for dmg nodes in races, but you can always build defensively and pick up the defence nodes, you'll definitely have time to kill her still and get max lvl points. You can also pick up firestorm at lvl 12, as well as flame dash (I think that's lvl 10, check poe wiki).

Orb into flame totem huh I usually do tendrils I will try orb this race! :D
orb is awful, but they nerfed LT.
Took about 8 minutes to kill merveil, other than my weapon (used a rare crude bow until just before merveil) all my gear was rolling nicely. Got MS on mudflats, decent pack RNG.

All I needed was a weapon.

Oh well, 6th ranger isn't too shabby for easy points.
