[Fan Art] the Temple
So after a discussion with Noadasi about using 3D to make background setups to paint over I thought Id try something a little different technique wise. Instead of using vectors, textures and crosshatching Im using 3D and painting with just a tiny bit of vector and texture for a flag in the background.
Its another witch, the background was made in Source Engines Hammer and then painted over because obviously, in game screenshot, really small, ultra pixely and nasty, just used as a guide to paint over with a Bamboo pad. Cant upload the full picture to imgur etc cause its over 5000 pixels wide, because print size, force of habit. Imgur always fucks up my pics anyway and distorts them, changes the colours a bit, makes them look a lot less sharp and vibrant so sod imgur, I uploaded the original to sendspace, link somewhere below, opening that up in photoshop and using the zoom tool to view it 1:1 actual pixels is the only way to really see this "as drawn" but Ive made condensed versions and crops for the thread. Original https://www.sendspace.com/file/48q7ob 1:1 size snip ultratinyzoomout 30% of actual size distorted imgur mess :(

Ill post up some other pics in a bit to show the works with Hammer etc. hf ladies and gents. EDIT: Workings Here are some images from various stages of putting this together for anyone interested. This thing took a little minute to make, it took 2 full days to do it, like 15 hours solid, went to bed, got up and then another 15 hours

this is the initial sketch of the witch, I drew it very flat with pure colours and as little directional light as possible. At this point I took it into the main image and everything else that was done to it was done with layers of "overlay" to paint light and shadow on to this flat sketch to make it sit within the scenes lightning. This is the scene built in Hammer, took a minute to remember how to actually use Hammer, been a while, a few tophatwaffle tutorial videos helped me on my way These are a few of the textures I made for the map, all the textures used in the map I made in photoshop with scatter brushing, noise, offset to make them tile etc. Just very basic textures and normal maps, nothing fancy needed as I was going to paint over the entire thing anyway. The normal maps were just basic things generated with the Nvidea plugin from hand done greyscale hightmaps The screenshot of the map I used as a base for the painting. It was way too small to actually use as the background itself but it was actually really good to use as an 'underpainting' if you will. I was going to render it with just flat grey surfaces but I decided to go ham and make textures for it in the end, which I would probably do again if I ever repeat the method, turned out well I think.
