Just hit 300 Hours and still I Don't know anything

I really enjoy Playing Poe i want to step my game up is there a way to find out how much life/Mana/es is mandatory for normal to Tormant?
How would i know when it is the right time to lvl up gems?
This might be a silly post but i want to be pointed in the right direction on understanding this game so in the future when i make builds or use skills i understand how my skills work and what makes them work the way they do.I was watching State of Exile and realized i had no clue on what is being talked about lol.The community is crazy advance and watching some of My Favorite Youtubers and wanting to ask questions is intimidating. What i am trying to say is how did you guys/gals Get to the point were become comfortable with the ins and outs of this great game and do you have any advice for someone at noob status as myself?

This heavily depends on the build, the items and the skills you use. A common suggestion is to reach about 150% increased life for A3m and maps, but it's not mandatory. It also can be done with about 100% and of course with way more too.

Until you get trigger gems like Cast when Damage taken, level them as soon as you're able to, depending on your stats. There are only a few gems that are also effective on lower levels, like eg. clarity or movement gems like lightning warp or leap slam (if you use them just for moving and not escaping). But again this is not valid for all builds. If you build for a big mana pool you probably can level clarity without any problems.

Learning is never finished. There are a lot of things I don't know yet. But it's not a necessity to know every detail to be able to play it successfully. And the expansion comes soon with new mechanics and items and skills, so one won't ever be able to say "I know everything about PoE" - well, except Raics or Vipermagi maybe :D
Spend hours on the skill tree. Learn every single keystone and relatively how far apart they are from one another.

Spend hours in the build forums seeing what works. What we dont have is a forum of failed builds so we can showcase what NOT to do.

Spend hours on the poe wiki looking at uniques and most importantly gems.

Spend hours in trade chat and "poe.trade" getting a feel for what things cost.

For years i searched for deep truths. A thousand revelations. At the very edge...the ability to think itself dissolves away.Thinking in human language is the problem. Any separation from 'the whole truth' is incomplete. My incomplete concepts may add to your 'whole truth', accept it or think about it
do you copy builds or make your own?

IMO the best way how to learn is making your own different characters. And every time you make one you should study related mechanics. And eventually, after some time, pieces of partial knowledge connect into overall knowledge

Part of what makes the game so fun is not knowing everything. It's not like I purposely stay ignorant of anything but there are just so many things to learn.

A few good places to start learning more:
Raics and vipermagi. Look through their post history and read some answers they've given to others.
The wiki is good for a reference to refresh your memory on things but also maybe learning some stuff if your a little lite on some basic knowledge.
POE has a good subreddit that has info directly from GGG along with other goodies.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. This forum answers most questions that are asked. YouTube is a wild animal where you can expect to get trolled but maybe you'll get an answer there..
Where there's one they're bound to divide it right in two.

Put forum users Raics and Vipermagi on speed dial.

They're path of exile's tireless unofficial support staff.
Spoiler

You're welcome.

This kind of praise does no good for anyone. Not saying they haven't been doing amazing things here but you're just setting unnecessary pressure on these gentlemen. Also, there are plenty of other people too who regularly help players like Drakier, lagwin1980, mark1030, ludvator, viperesque, ionface and list goes on.

It's a community after all. I guess "thank you" from the people who they helped and helping itself is often enough of a reward.

That's no praise, and I'm certainly no gentleman. My love for finely brewed tea is hardly enough to compensate for the horrible show I'd make of a top hat and mustache.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.
