What's the best way to get elemental resistances?

Before I took a break, most of my characters had high elemental resistances through the resistance nodes on the passive tree. Now, most of those nodes are gone, so that's not an option. Considering that capping resistance for a single element in Merciless would require resistance of 135%, what's the best way to achieve that now?

Through the mixed resistance rings?

Crafting rares with the wanted stats, which is kind of extremely expensive?

Just using flasks with resistance?

Or what?

A mixture of items and passive points.

Good rares are the only good source of resistances and that means good rolls or trading.

Passive points mean less survivability and damage, but less required from gear.
most players in endgame dont spec into resist passives (uless it is a big one near their path), they have resists from gear. Or possibly from Purity od X auras, these are being used to increse max resistance cap

I see, thanks. I guess my best option is to get the Loremaster master to level 8 and craft the rares myself...
or buy some gear for 1-2 chaos per piece

rings are often used for resists

You will find decent resist items long before you get a master to 8. You can use Orbs of Alchemy on white resist rings you find. I found this one:

And I got this one from a Jeweler's strongbox I corrupted:
