Herald of Fire/Ice mechanics?
Herald of fire, adds % of your physical attack damage as fire + ignites nearby enemies for % of overkill damage
Seeing as this is an active skill gem self buff and can be supported independent of your main skill how does this interact in regards to your main attack? Elemental Proliferation - will this spread all your attacks statuses? just the ignite from overkill? or not work at all? Increased burning damage - I'm assuming this will increase your overkill ignite's damage Added cold/lightning/chaos - Would this add damage to your main attack through the buff? (i'm assuming this might work better on Herald of Ice since it's flat damage) Increased AoE, Conc effect - I'd imagine these would work as intended due to the AoE nature of the ignite IGN: OldManBalls (Warbands)

I think it works very similar to proliferation internally but the two shouldn't interfere with each other. Their ignites won't stack, obviously.
If it was an item effect it wouldn't get affected by your burning damage nodes, but it isn't, it's a skill effect and should be affected normally. After all, it has inc burning damage as a quality bonus, it would be pretty weird if it didn't work. I'd say it works like an aura in that regard, so added gems would do nothing. Yeah, those work on tempest shield but herald adds damage to your attack, it doesn't do any damage itself. Probably, but it depends on how it was implemented, so, if it adds a 'spreads overkill damage in an X radius' property to your attack skills, then you would have to put inc radius on your main skill instead of herald gem I suppose. Needs testing. Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

" I think that the damage it adds to the main attack is is a "global" property. Thus wouldn't be affected by supports. BUT in both herald of ash/ice they do have their own damage like tempest shield. For ash it's the ignite on nearby enemies and on ice it's the shatter damage. I think those two properties can be affected by supports linked to the herald skill. Some interesting combo's to try out Herald of Ice + Added Cold + cold Penetration Herald (any) + culling strike Herald of Ice + curse on hit + curse These wouldn't affect the mob you're hitting but once you killed a mob it could start a chain reaction if your herald skill was supported correctly to do massive damage IGN: OldManBalls (Warbands)

Of course, added damage gems should affect the ice explosion on shatter, that's fine, and culling would work too, but I guess those wouldn't work on ash.
It would have to be tested, curse on hit especially, that gem is pretty selective about skills it supports, if I get any I'll try it out. Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

Anyone know if you can link leech gems to these and have that portion of your damage leech? Or would it only effect the explosion on kill?

Love Herald of Fire so far. It's a good replacement for melee splash and it makes skills like domintating blow and heavy strike compete with molten strike.
Right now I'm using it with sweep and it's like a hurricane of degen. |

I like the idea of using Herald of Ash to burn stuff with an attack that is mainly non-fire damage.
Does it require a corpse to spread the fire? Is the overkill damage (which I assume is the amount of damage received by the monster, minus however many HP/ES they had before the fatal blow) converted into 'base' damage, to be multiplied further by passives and the like? (There's the potential to double-dip on passives like increased projectile/area/trap/mine damage.) |

try this setup, I have tested it with almost every skill and it works great, especially with dagger skills
: herald of ash + increased burning damage + elemental prolif + increased AOE. Now use it with dual strike crit dagger shadow on single weakest enemy and the whole pack burns in miliseconds. I used a flameblast witch burner before, but it doesnt even compare. I have a 60k dps dual strike shadow with 700% crit multiplier and i 1-hit almost everything besides bosses. The downside is the reflect of course... I'm currently playing around with something I have called a "molotov build" - same herald of ash setup, just with spectral throw, (its just much safer than going into a full pack of enemies). |
