Orb of fusing working backwards

I had a piece of armor that had four sockets, the top two were linked and the bottom two were linked. I wanted all of them to be linked so I used an orb of fusing to link the upper left socket to the lower left socket. Instead of linking them it unlinked the top two and I lost the orb of fusing

orbs of fusing link results are random.

but i do hate when i use a fusing and end up with no links at all.

Good to know. It just threw me off because I've only had it link the way I wanted it to in the past
