Must read for anyone using SA/Chain on Mana

So for me - I view Chain as a must use. And I despise the Blood Magic gem on physical based skills. Because of it's significantly faster clear speeds compared to Pierce and the fact it is safer vs. Physical Reflect - I am willing to make a number of accommodations to ensure it's use. Until yesterday - those accommodations were basically using 6 nodes to get Charisma to ensure I had more of my mana pool to work with, as well as making sure I had + mana on a few pieces of gear to increase my mana pool as much as possible to help out a little more. Obviously, Mind Drinker as well although I don't actually consider that an accommodation to make it work as you would use that even if you were using Pierce on mana. Also I use a Harby - so no Mana benefit from a Lioneye's.

In essence this left me with with 175 unreserved mana out of a total of 547 mana. Pre leech nerf - no issues whatsoever. But ever since the leech nerf it has become clunky and I have had to compensate by adding in a Mana potion into my pot set, whereas prior one wasn't needed. Not the worst thing in the world, but still kind of annoying and I haven't liked the clunky feeling. I have been searching for equips that give me everything else I need plus more mana - but haven't been able to find any. However, in experimenting with my tree, I have solved the issue while also making the build stronger.

First - What Changed

Spoiler
Before the Leech nerf - all instances of damage would give you leech thus extending the duration of your leeching at 12.5% of max mana per second. So with a pool of 547 mana, I would leech at 68.375 per second. My tooltip physical damage on my SA with Chain is was something like 575-1000. So when I shot, technically there are 18 possible hits but that would have been a perfect scenario - let's say it hit 10 times at 700 (no crit in this example here) each hit. .02* 7000 damage 140 mana leeched - so that shot would have me leeching for 2.04 Seconds. And since I am shooting over 2 times per second - you can see how this would cause in essence a perma 68.375 return per second, plus the 11 or so mana/sec base regen. Technically, I use more mana than that since I am shooting over 2 times per second at 64 per shot. However, no group I'd ever be shooting into would live long enough to clear out my 175 pool - so in essence I would never ran out of mana.

Post change - each leech instance happens simultaneously and you only get the one with the highest rate (and in my case it's all the exact same rate so it doesn't matter). The other hits leech doesn't queue up for you. This hit anything that provides near instantaneous higher volume lower damage hits (read: chain) very hard. So using the exact same example above - I now only get 14 mana, or leech for .20 seconds of leech. But I am attacking .45 times per second! HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM! You can see why it feels "clunky."

My Fix

Spoiler
This was my tree, pretty standard for Physical Crit Split Arrow:

Before

What I have done was removed the 6 nodes for Charisma - instead of giving myself more usable mana, I increased my maximum pool greatly increasing both my innate mana regen and my leech rate. I now have a usable pool of 137 mana - with a total mana pool of 687. In essence, I increased both my innate mana regen as well as the rate I leech by 25% - and it now plays much smoother. 14 innate regen per second, and a leech rate of 85.875. By giving up the 6 nodes used on Charisma - I used 5 in the upper left to get the 3x 6% life 8% mana nodes. So at the same time I fixed one problem, I added about 220HP - up to 5588 now. Oh - and with the 1 node left I grabbed the 6/25 node next in line on the piercing shot circle, so even though I lost a tad off of Hatred (8%) I still added 1k to my Frenzy DPS - increasing it from 53-54k.

Yeah, I dropped Charisma after that one thread. And those hybrid nodes walk you next to Clear Mind, which is nice too.
dont have the power charge? and no crit multi wheels?
ign HC: Ek_dank Acct name xDank
No - I crit at 55% now, and the incremental DPS increase with power charges, while dropping a gem to get pcoc in, was vastly inferior when I tested it to other options.

For Crit Multi - I find 3 nodes for each 45% more pretty inefficient. But I also play on SC where a few of my items offer a little more crit multi than you can get now in the new leagues. My skills both have like 700 multi. If I was playing in Ambush I think I would definitely give those nodes a serious look. The interesting thing about the mechanics of this game, is that since everything is additive, the more you get of anything the less incremental value more of it creates.

That being said, this had absolutely nothing to do with this post, but always happy to help :)

I had the same problem with my SA crit build but as you said using a flask isnt to bad I have it crafted as surgens so its up most of the time.

But even with 5% mana leech from gear its still difficult to keep up with the leech. At first I wanted to use a Lioneye's glare but the attack speed(and low crit) stopped me from getting one as I knew mana would be a problem. Now using a harbringer bow with even better DPS and crit chance.

Will deffinately try this out tonight.

Here my current tree which is mostly the same.

Btw how much mana leech you using total? Just for my own refference.

Just the same problem here, with 74 mana per LA shot. I "fixed" it by investing in mana and mana regen on gear in addition to taking Primal Spirit:

And I also snapshot a low Clarity on life with Malachai's Simula, but this should be fixed in patch 1.2. I can see my mana problems coming back, even with a surgeon hybrid flask.

When two witches watch two watches, which witch watches which watch?
If the witches watching watches watch the same watch while you watch which witch watches which watch, they switch watches; then, the watch switching witches watch which watch you watch.
Watching witches watch watches is not for the faint of heart...
I started using Thief's Torment for the mana gained on hit, and now I have zero problems keeping my SA going. The life on hit is also amazing. You do lose a bunch of damage by not having two rings, but it is worth it for me.

Why not get mana geyser right next to charisma?
It's not on tree route.

The shortest path is 5 points either way and you get more out of the Life and Mana cluster.
