Adistridos' Ice Spear Totem build (1.0.6) [Theorycraft]

This is the build I plan to run once the new leagues come out.

Required Uniques:
Spoiler
At least 5L Soul Mantle

4L Maligaro's Simula

Other equipment to consider:
Spoiler
Weapon: High spell crit and spell damage dagger or wand. Void Battery.
Shield: Rathpith Globe. High resist archon kite shield. Life/es/spellpower/res spirit shield
Gloves: Life + resist EV gloves. Maligaro's Viruosity.
Boots: Life + resist + MS EV boots.
Rings: Life + resist + spell damage + global crit chance.
Amulet: Life + resist + spell damage + global crit multiplier + global crit chance.
Belt: Life + resist + armor. Base of choice: Leather.

BASIC IDEA:
Get to 95% crit chance and 1450% crit multiplier for ice spear totems with power charges + passives + crit on gear. Proliferate powerful freezes and shocks all day long. Use blood magic from Malachai's Simula Iron Mask to keep up with insane mana cost.

Calculations that prove 95% crit chance:
Spoiler
Base crit chance of Ice Spear is 7%. Max crit chance is 95%.
((95-7)/7)*100 = 1257% increased crit chance needed to cap.
1257% - 600% (implicit effect of ice spear) = 657%.
657% - 350% (power charges) = 307%.
307% - 160% (passives) = 147%.
147% - 150% (spell damage dagger with spell crit roll OR Void Battery + Maligaro's) = -3%.

Maximum theoretical Critical Multiplier
Spoiler
280% (passives) + 149% (20/20 crit damage gem) + 50% (Maligaro's) + 70% (max crit multi roll on amulet) = 549%.
150% + 150% * 5.49 = 973.5%.
973.5% * 1.49 (crit weakness) = 1450%.

In 5L soul mantle:
Ice Spear
Added Lightning
Greater Multiple Projectiles
Increased Critical Multiplier
Elemental Proliferation
(add Pierce for 6L.)
(if you have 6L, swap Lightning penetration for Ele Prolif, Cold Penetration for Pierce, and LMP for GMP against bosses.)

Level 1 Ice Spear
GMP
LMP
Power Charge on Critical

Critical Weakness
Enduring Cry
Faster Casting

Molten Shell

Fill up the rest of the sockets with whatever CoDT or utility links you want.

Due to mana constraints, Ice spear totem builds are extremely clunky without life based + blood magic or life based + EB. (In my opinion, blood magic through Malachai's Simula is better. See the FAQ.)

Use level 1 ice spear + GMP + LMP + Power charge on critical to generate power charges. Keep several Sapping Sanctified Life Flasks of Warding to keep yourself up while summoning totems.

Leveling:
Spoiler
Get a Malachai's Simula as quickly as possible, but don't equip it until keeping up with mana cost is annoying with potions+clarity (probably some point in Cruel). Get all life nodes within reach as soon as you exit Witch tree. Level with searing bond, or the following:

In Random 4L (later Malachai's Simula):
Spoiler
Freezing Pulse
Greater Multiple Projectiles
Life Leech
Faster Projectiles/Added Lightning/Faster Casting/Crit damage/etc.

Feel free to use
Level 1 ice spear
GMP
LMP
Power charge on Critical
from the very start to get some extra crit chance with power charges.

Questions I expect to be frequently asked:
Spoiler
Q: Why Life-based? Why not Chaos Inoculation?

A: CI build would never be able to keep up with mana cost. Even if it could, going to Ranger tree for crit multi grants us access to very powerful life nodes that would make life-based better even if CI could manage the mana cost. Not being able to effectively apply Ghost Reaver or Zealot's Oath would leave you only able to regenerate ES by waiting, which can be deadly in some situations. (ex: ignited or punctured by high-level map mob)

Q: Why Malachai's Simula? Why not Eldritch battery?

A: EB costs 2 extra skill points. You still have to manage your mana and it's still a huge pain in the ass. You can't stack only life potions. The build has poor mana pool and mana regen scaling potential anyways. You still can't run any useful auras, because the only useful one is 60%(grace), and Ice Spear Totem mana cost is so bad, it will make it difficult to get all of your totems up. (Plus, pretty much everyone runs Grace, and this is a party oriented build). Finally, you lose a significant amount of effective HP (300-600).

Q: Can I run this build with <insert class here> instead?

A: No. When it comes to this build, Templar and Shadow starting areas are basically a joke compared to Witch starting area. Scion version would be about as viable as a Marauder or Duelist version. Two of the main things you must overcome in making this build are low spell power and cast speed from passives. Even running this build as a Ranger would be more effective than as Scion, Templar, or Shadow, and that version is so bad that I would never consider posting it as a viable alternative to the Witch version.

Q: Spending 1200-1800 life to summon totems - wouldn't that be dangerous?

A: Not when you are regenerating 448 life per second with Sapping Sanctified Life Flasks of Warding.

I think you would be better off with selfcasting and use the extra points for more defences

You take ir but you have 0 armor/evasion nodes from passives
Dogs Summoner - http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/885199
You're right, the build as it is lacks % armor nodes. One possibility is to drop Ancestral bond but keep Soul Mantle, respec into armor nodes, and use Freezing Pulse + Life Leech + GMP + Power Charge on Critical - a very "classic" build, a throwback to the days when Ancestral bond was OP and didn't remove your ability to deal damage yourself :P.

However, what I will probably do is simply respec out of Arcane Potency and the crit multi nodes after Heartseeker and respec into the templar's armor/es nodes. Passives tree has been updated to reflect this.

As for self-casting, this would probably be the only non-chaining, non-AOE build where you could actually one-shot yourself. I did the calculations, and you can probably hit yourself for about 3k against single reflect. It really isn't an option unless you go CI + Vaal pact, and then you've killed any originality the build has.

EDIT: After testing the build a bit further I've been amazed at how significant the energy shield is. Even at level 60 on my test character, I have ~900, 1400 if a party member has Discipline. Furthermore, the energy shield has been indispensable for keeping me safe while spending so much life to summon totems. The templar's armor/energy shield nodes are definitely the correct choice rather than the % armor and damage with maces/axes/swords near Ancestral bond. Passives tree has been updated to reflect this.
