Useful skills to a 1h ranger?
I'm looking to go with a dual weilding or a 1 handed + shield ranger.
I'm not very familiar with with very many spells/supports, so I am asking for some suggestions of a nice list of all the possible spells/supports that might be useful to this kind of build. Thanks! See you, Space Cowboy...

In terms of skills for a single or dual wielding sword Ranger, here's a good breakdown. What skills you use, supports you use, and supplementing skills you choose is up to you. Finding good synergies between your build and the available skill/support gems is part of the experience.
For both single and dual wielding: 1. Cleave - AoE skill 2. Flicker Strike - DPH skill, with cooldown timer 3. Lightning Strike - AoE skill, produces lightning projectiles 4. Frenzy - DPH skill, produces frenzy charges 5. Elemental Hit - DPH skill, randomly chooses an elemental damage type per hit 6. Viper Strike - DoT skill, produces viper charges 7. Puncture - DoT skill, causes enemies to bleed 8. Whirling Blades - AoE/movement/utility skill 9. Leap Slam - AoE/movement/utility skill 10. Heavy Strike - DPH skill For single wielding only: 1. Double Strike - DPH skill 2. Shield Charge - DPH/Movement/utility skill For dual wielding only: 1. Dual Strike - DPH skill All of these melee skills can be supplmented by a number of support gems, such as these: 1. Faster Attacks 2. Mana Leech 3. Melee Physical Damage 4. Melee Damage on Full Life 5. Weapon Elemental Damage 6. Life Leech 7. Life Gain on Hit 8. Increased Critical Strikes 9. Increased Critical Damage 10. a) Added Cold Damage, b) Added Fire Damage, c) Added Lightning Damage, d) Added Chaos Damage 11. a) Fire Penetration, b) Cold Penetration, c) Lightning Penetration After that, there's a number of skills that can be used to supplement your attack skills, falling into 5 distinct categories: 1. Auras: - Hatred, Anger, Wrath, Determination, Vitality, Purity, Clarity, Determination, Haste, Grace, Discipline, Tempest Shield 2. Curses: - Temporal Chains, Warlord's Mark, Enfeeble, Vulnerability, Critical weakness, Elemental Weakness, Conductivity, Flammability, Frostbite 3. Totems: - Decoy, Devouring, Rejuvenation, Shockwave, Flame 4. Traps: - Bear, Fire, Conversion, Freeze Mines 5. Buffs: - Enduring Cry, Immortal Call, Blood Rage, Phase Run For Ranger build tips, tactics, and critiques, visit this thread: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/69224 Last edited by Islidox#7754 on Jan 11, 2013, 2:49:02 PM

I'm assuming that DoT is more centered around killing bosses and shouldn't be a main focus of the build? Could I get away with just having one DoT skill for killing high level enemies?

" Thanks a lot, very informative post. Tenouddaten. See you, Space Cowboy...

" You would be correct in that assumption. Most builds do not rely on DoT as their focus, unless it's something like a PoisonArrow build or of that nature in order to farm quickly. As such, relying on 1 or 2 DoT skills is fine. For Ranger build tips, tactics, and critiques, visit this thread:

You forgot one spell that I'm currently using, Detonate Dead. Now the basic Detonate isn't the greatest, but quality adds 3% cast speed per %, which means a 10% Detonate is 30% faster to cast. Slap it on a spell totem and it does some pretty good aoe, while staying at a very affordable mana cost(Detonate Dead doesn't need to be lvled to do dmg). Using this for leveling and it does some serious work, even though it does get focused by mobs quite a lot.
Not a good option for Lightning Strike spammers but otherwise for 1H+shield setup it's a pretty solid aoe compared to other options, due to 1H AoE being fairly weak in general. |

@PyrosEien: I generally don't count actual attack spells as suitable in a melee-user's repetoire of skills for the reason that you don't do much damage with them. Detonate Dead is something of a utility spell that any build can utilize to their tactical advantage. However, it's very possible to live without it too.
