Lightning Penetration support gem..
So I use Wrath. I linked my Lightning Penetration support gem to it and it shows no sign of gaining benefits. I then decided to use an actual lightning spell (Shock Nova) and it shows it in the spells attributes.
Is Lightning Penetration supposed to not work with Wrath? If so, why? It adds lightning damage. I hope this is just a Beta Bug. Anyone? EDIT: Also the Added Lightning Damage support gem does affect Wrath. But if I combine with any other spell (I'm using Firestorm) it will add lightning damage. wtf is up with this? Beta Bug I hopes.... EDIT2: Also, increase duration does not show up on Raise Skeletons (when you mouse over) but it does show on the icon as a red D.. Pretty sure you cannot link those types of support gems to any aura, as it would become too OP.
Example, Hatred+ fire damage + extra damage on full hp (with CI)+cold penetration+chaos damage. Then every single attack would have the above effects as long as you have Hatred on, tad OP. Only aura combos i know of are, Aura + mana reduction or Blood magic. Last edited by Barnabas#6770 on Jan 7, 2013, 11:33:21 PM

Link light pen to your main attack;
Wrath Applies a static damage range to your main attack, wrath is not dealing any damage directly to enemies; therefore, linking light pen will do nothing. |

^ See that I find a bit silly. I'm sure you are correct but as a support gem why is it able to apply to a non-lightning damage attach and yet not be applied to a lighting based aura? I would think if you linked a support gem like this to any gem (be it lightning or not) it would apply the benefits.
Edit, sry didnt see the other post So how would this make Wrath any more OPd then any other lightning skill? "Because the "lightning based aura" is an aura, and thus doesn't deal damage. Lightning Penetration modifies how the supported skill deals damage, so it can't possibly have any effect on a skill that doesn't deal damage. Same with things like Added Lightning Damage - they modify the damage dealt by the supported skill, so have no effect on skills that don't deal damage. | |
" It's consistent. Auras do not do damage. They are not attacks or spells. They apply a buff to your character and surrounding characters. The only thing you can modifiy is an aura's cost, its buff effect amount, and its radius. If we let support gems treat auras like attacks or spells, then we'd need to make auras properly interact with added fire damage, added lightning damage, increased critical strike chance, et cetera - basically, you could run 3-4 auras with all of these support gems on them, and you could then further link your main attack spell with these same supports, resulting in a ridiculous amount of critical strike chance and added damage, at minimal cost to your mana if you don't level up these flat mana auras. By making auras their own distinct class of skill, we can in the future have a class of support gems that only effect auras/buff-based skills. Supports that effect attacks and spells and non-buff abilities do not need to be balanced around the fact you can stack them in persistent aura effects, like you're suggesting they do, and as such can be more powerful and meaningful. If we let auras add lightning damage and add to your lightning penetration, then everyone would do it, and we'd have to nerf those support gems. How fair is it for hatred, anger and wrath to add to your lightning penetration, ontop of the fact your elemental hit does too? Combined, you could have over 100% penetration. One thing to keep in mind: the support gems are intended (and balanced!) to affect only the skills/gems they are linked to - making them work with auras would let them affect any skill that is affected by the aura... and not only yours but also your mates and minions ^^
